Show High School Notes During the past month two lectures have been delivered to the High School students by prominent citizens of our city one by attorney Elias Hansen on tho subject Purposes and Aims in Education Ed-ucation the other by Judge A Snxey ou the subject Realistic Scenes and Events of the Civil War Both were very Interesting and instructive A very unique social event took place Saturday evening last The place was tho upper rooms of the Hughes building the occasion the observance of halloween Hallow-een The ever active Sophomores had 1 previously conceived the idea of entertaining enter-taining their fellow classmen the I1Tis needless lo nay they worked out their conception in an admirable ad-mirable manner At seven oclock the wiley Freshmen walked up the stairs at the top of which a gigantic Jack f 0 Lantern Veering to the right they entered the door and were ushered by the goblins into the hall of death There ranged the ghosts like statues in marble The whitened walls rose aloof and seemed to chill the figures and cresentsi with which they were adorned All was silent The lights were turned low Moans from the goblins were audible Low peals of thunder rover brated through the hall The timid Freshmen paused pushed forward fain would they retreat The silent I statues beckoned them to advance To the right pat old Mcphisto over the caldron which boiled out the evils of Pandora A grit a shriek from him filled the student with icy fear as he merged from this catacomb of chilly gloom On entering the main room the student stu-dent quietly took his seat and awaited developments There he viewed the twilight decorations which were profuse pro-fuse and tastefully arranged much to the honor of the committee in charge At a given signal lights were turned lower moans increased thunders echoed echo-ed At the discharge of Mephistos weapon ti curtain was released in the corner of the room A tableau revealed the wrinkled features of Ubrica the hag who related in mournful tones a dreadful goblin story Her seat abandoned aban-doned Mephisto took it and sat shyly I there during a well prepared program After the program a number of prize games were conducted to the pleasure of all persons present The ghosts became active and entertained in a commendable way Appropriate refreshments re-freshments consisting of squash pie molasses cake molasses candy and jello were served All joined in making the evening one long to be remembered The Freshmen take pleasure thanking the Sophomores for the courtesy they so amiably extended |
