Robertson, Sec.; C. S. Thompson, Pres. Mr. aud Mrs. Gerald Stewart with their children and Mrs. Dart's mother, j During the past month two lectures have been delivered to the High School students by prominent citizens of our city; one by attorney Elias Hansen on the subject "Purposes and Aims in Education," the other by Judge A. Saxey ou the subject, "Realistic Scenes and Events of the Civil War." Both were very interesting and instructive. 'Tis needless to say they worked out their conception in an ad mirable manner. At seven o'clock the iviley Freshmen walked up the stairs, a,1, the top of which a gigantic Jack O' Lantern. Veering to the right, they entered the door and were ushered by the goblins into the hall of death. There ran?ed the ghosts like statues in marble. The whitened walls rose aloof and seemed to chill the figures and creseiits with which they were adorned. All was silent. The lights were turned M.ians from the goblins were low. audible. Low peals of thunder rever-brate- d through the hall. The timid Freshmen paused, pushed forward-fa- in would they retreit. , The silent statues beckoned them to advance. To the right sat old Mephisto over the caldron which boiled out the evils of Pandora. A grin, a shriek from him filled the student with icy fear as he merged from this catacomb of chilly gloom. On entering the main room the student quietly took his seat and awaited There he viewed the developments. twilight decorations which were profuse and tastefully arranged, much to the honor of the committee iu charge. At a given signal lights were turned lower, moans increased, thunders echo ed. At the discharge of Mephisto's weapon, a curtain was released in the corner of the room. A tableau revealed the wrinkled features of Ubrica, the hag, who related in mournful tones, a dreadful goblin story. Her seat, abandoned, Mephisto took it and sat shyly there during a well prepared program. After the program a number of prize games were conducted to the pleasure of all persons present. The ghosts became active and entertained in a commendable way. Appropriate refreshments consisting of squash pio, molasses cake, molasses candy and jello were served. All joined in making the evening one long to be remembered. Mr. Stewart and family have spent the summer in lanatla, but decided that Utah is good enough for them. Mayor Snell informs us that small pox is prevalent is Springville, and that the city council has deemed it wiso to forbid citizens of Springville attending places of amusement or public gatherings on this account. He also says that any suspicious cases should be reported to Dr. Warner at once, and any attempt at concealment will be prosecuted under the State law.which makes it an offense punishable with six months in prison and $ 100.00 fine not to report such cases. To all lovers of history the most interesting and facinating after that of our own country is the history of Rome. Among the most thrilling passages of the old Roman times are the stories of the heroic gladiators who fought for "Nero, the supremacy in the arena. Gladiator" soon to be presented here by Mr. Sanford Dodge gives us a wonderfully vivid chapter of the ancient Roman chapter, showing as it does, as if by a flash of lightening, the conditions of life, the struggles, the hopes i.f Iku .,.,,1 fi.un - lllllllll't-..... iv uto nf thoHC nut, world's civilization, as well as the suffering of the early Christian martyrs.
