Show REDLEG HURLERS WILL PROVE HARD NUTS FOR WHITE SOX TO CRACK Reuther and Sallee Rated Among Best Left-handers in Business; Ring and Eller Not to Be Overlooked; Over-looked; Cicotte and Williams Will Carry Burden for the Gleason Crew. By WILLIAM HILLMAN. Universal Service Staff Correspondent. NEW YORK, Sept. 5. The Indian summer days are coming, and Kid Gleason and Pat Moran, with the pennants practically tucked under their arms, are beginning to polish pol-ish up for the great autumn show the world 'a series. Some rabid American league fan might add for the annual slaughter of the National leaguers. But if the Chicago White Sox are preparing to uphold the tradition of the American loague, they might w-ell be considering a method of attack that will shatter the Cincinnati pitching corps for that is going to be their most formidable for-midable stumbling block. Moran 'a greatest accomplishment this year haa been his pitching staff. He haa developed no pitching star, for hia experience with Alexander, when he piloted the Phillies, has taught him that a pitcher who does most of the hurling during tho playing season is not going to be an ace in the world's series. Moran has distributed his work evenly among five hurlers Eller, Sallee, Reuther, Ring and Fisher with the result re-sult that none of them has been overworked. over-worked. None of the Cincinnati pitchers pitch-ers has lost moro than five games, except ex-cept Eller, who has suffered seven defeats, de-feats, but he tops the Red hurlers in the number of victories. Discount Eller's Shiner. Despite popular prediction in Red-land, Red-land, Eller is not likely to be the pitching pitch-ing star against the White Sox. Eller, who depends upon his shine ball to win, is going to be very popular with Gleason Glea-son 's batters, for they have been getting get-ting a lot of practice batting against the shiners of Cicotte. Reuther and Sallee, the star port dingers of the Reds, aro going to be the mainstays of Pat Moran. Reuther has developed into one of the most dependable de-pendable pitchers in the National league. He has a world of stuff on his ball, and should be especially effective against the hard-hitting left-handed batters bat-ters of the --White Sox. He is cool and ' steady in action, and Moran imbued him with great conlidence. Sallee, when right, is one of the hardest hard-est of pitchers to beat. Sallee, however, how-ever, has come to depend more upon his head than his arm, and whether he can fool the White Sox sluggers is seriously seri-ously doubted. If Sallee is in shape he is going to be a tough nut to crack for all the cleverness of Gleason 's men. Ring May Show. Ring probably will get a chance to start a game. It is not likely that he will afford the White Sox any trouble. But King may be able to get away with something. Babe Adams upset the Detroit De-troit Tigers in 1909, and no one suspected sus-pected he was capable of doing it. Cicotte, of course, is figured to be the star of the world's series. He will undoubtedly beat the Reds every time ho starts, but he cannot possibly win more than three games. Cicotte does not depend upon his shiner. He has a fast ball and a good spitter to mix with, and knows when and how to use them. His greatest effectiveness lies in the skill with which he varies his delivery. Williams, Gleason 's port side slinger, should be able to defeat Cincinnati if he is in good shape. The trouble is that he is erratic. He would have to be in top form to subdue such sluggers as Rousch, Groh and Mngee. If he is in form for at least two games it will be mightv blue for the Reds. Loudcrmilk, Faber and Kerr will not prove effective against Cincinnati. Loudermilk needs a five-run start to begin with. Faber and Kerr aro only good for about five or six innings. James, the only other White Sox pitcher, is too wild. - Upon Cicotte- and Williams depend the chances of the White Sox in the series. Cincinnati has at least three who can be trusted to make a hard fight for the honors. But Cicotte is so much better than the others that if one other White Sox pitcher comes through presumably that one being Williams Gleason 's men may do the expected. However, the Indian summer days are coming, and man as well as Nature will be profuse with gold at the coming world's series, which should be the most popular in many years. |
