Show MUST BE AMERICAN. The coming chairman of the immigration immigra-tion committee of tho house, Representative Represen-tative Albert Johnson of Washington, will, on the first day of the next session ses-sion of congress, reintroduce the bill providing for the suspension of all immigration im-migration for a term of four years. He will amend the measure by adding a clause providing for the deportation of all aliens, who withdrew their applications applica-tions for citizenship in order to evade the selective service draft. There is no good reason why these parasites should bo allowed to remain in the United States and hold positions which should te filled by the young men who followed fol-lowed the flag. The influence of the foreign element, however, is very strong in the United States, and it is doubtful if congress will pass such a bill upon the eve of a presidential election, elec-tion, if amended as indicated. It seems to be the opinion of very many citizens of this country that all immigration should be suspended for a term of four years, but this measure died in the last congress, and it may be that Representative Represen-tative Johnson will experience much difficulty in his new effort. Mr. Johnson will add a second amendment amend-ment to the original bill, this one. providing pro-viding for tho cancellation of tho citizenship citi-zenship papers of all naturalised citizens citi-zens who agitated revolt and preached the overthrow of the American system of government. We believe he should make a separate measure of this amendment, amend-ment, for we do not believe any patriotic patri-otic senator or representative would vote against it on its merits, while if it is joined to the immigration bill there is some danger that it will fail. It will be a difficult matter to get rid of such people unless congress passes a law that will stand the acid test of the courts. A few weeks ago alien agitators agi-tators aided in fomenting a general strike at Seattle and other places on the Pacific coast. Some of these agita tors were arrested and hurried to New York. Orher alien agitators wore taken from Chicago to Ellis island for the same purpose. A few were released i after a searching examination. The others have found lawyers to fight for them in the courts and are still with us. The time is coming in this country when pure and unadulterated Ameri- ! canism must prevail. Men and women who como here from other countries will be compelled to drop their old-world prejudices, imbibe the spirit of progress and march shoulder to shoulder with native-born American citizens or go back whence they came. If this does i not como to pass great difficulty will be experienced in holding the republic together. Our system of goverument has withstood many shocks and strains and our flag has sheltered the poor and oppressed from many lands. But we cannot allow any more of tliese people peo-ple to come over here and tell us how to run our internal and foreign affairs, or to preach sedition and anarchv. If they cannot bocomo Americans in every sense of the word, they have no right to be in this country and they should not complain S they are deported. We sympathize with the object Representative Representa-tive Johnson has in view, for it is absolutely abso-lutely certain that we must safeguard our own interests or run tho risk of turning the country over to the Bol-sheviki. |
