After having been under th surveillance sur-veillance of federal officers for nearly a year because of his avowed sympathy for Germany and it having been estab-Jisbed estab-Jisbed to the satisfaction of the United States government that he was an ayent of the kaiser, engaged in recruiting Germans for the imperial army, Alfred Frederick Hiist, manager of the Monroe Mon-roe photographic studio, 1 '22 &outh Main, was arrested in this city yesterday yester-day on a warrant issued by the president. presi-dent. He is now being held at the i couuty jail, and as toon as his photo-i photo-i graph aDd general description can be made a part of the government records ' Hust will be interned at the war prison barracks at Fort Douglas. Was Never Naturalized. Hust is a native of Germany, having been bor at Saarbrueckeu (Lorraine), November 1(1, 1 S S 2 . He has been a resident of thp United States since May 22, 190.3. While he claims French parentage, pa-rentage, he declared, on numerous occasions in public places in Salt Lake,, during the last year, botli before and after the declaratiou of war by l ho United States, that Germany was his native na-tive land and that Germany would al-I al-I ways have his sympathy and aid. j. It was learned last night, following j his arrest . on a presidential warrant, ' that Hust had been found to be J actually an agent of the German gov-I gov-I eminent and for many months has been I engaged iu recruiting men for the German Ger-man army, working in connection with German agents iu Mexico, shipping the recruits by the way of Mexico and paying pay-ing their transportation to Germany. R has also been learned from Hources other than federal, that Hust has been in constant touch, with German agents in other parts of the country, working with them in beeuring recruits for the (ierman army, and that frequent conferences con-ferences were held with other German residents with the definite purpose of doing everything possible to aid Germany Ger-many on this side of theAt!antie and defeat the purposes 0f the Fuited States in the war. When Leon Bone, special agent of the department of justice, was reticent last night concerning many of the facts which, led to the arrest of Hust, he admitted ad-mitted that the latter had been active in spreading T. W. W. literature, which of itself would have been sufficient to warrant his internment. The arrest 0 Hust h considered one of the most important im-portant yet made in any part of the country.
