President "Wilson has selected the following men as members of the tariff commission: Professor Pro-fessor FYank Y. Taussig of Harvard university, uni-versity, former Representative David J. Lewis of Cumberland, Md. ; Daniel C. Roper of MoCall. J?. C. : K. P. CosttKiin of Denver, Colo. ; Y. S, Culbertson of Emporia, Em-poria, Kan. Professor Tn ussier, who will he chairman chair-man of the commission. Is a native of - St. Louis. He has been connected with Harvard university since 1SS2 and has obtained a leave of absence from that Institution until September. 191 S, to accept ac-cept the position on the commission. Lewis, Democrat, was chair- j man of the labor committee of the last ; house of representatives. He was de- : feated for election as senator from Mary- ; lid in the last election. He Is a native Pennsylvania. Daniel C. Hoper. Democrat, was con-nected con-nected with the house ways and means committee during the framing of the present tariff bill as an authority on sta- j tistics. Ho is a native of South Carolina and until recently was first assistant post- ; master general. William Kent. independent, was a member of congress from the First California Cali-fornia district In the last congress, but . did not run for re-election. During the last campaign he supported President Wilson and was president of the Wilson Independent league. He Is a native of Chicaqo. but has lived In California most of his life. E. P. Costigan is a lawyer, who is looked upon as one of the founders of the Progressive party in Colorado. Originally Orig-inally he was a Republican, but in 1012. and again in 1914, he was the Progressive candidate for governor. Mr. Culbertson, a Republican, is an examiner ex-aminer In the legal department of the federal trade commission. He comes from Emporia, Kan. The nominations of the members of the commission were sent today to the senate. sen-ate. . Professor Taussig was nominated for a term of twelve years, Mr. Roper for ten vears. Mr. Lewis for eight years. Mr. Kent for six years, Mr. Culbertson for four years and Mr. Costigan for two years. The commissioners are to receive 57500 a year each. Chairman Simmons of the finance committee com-mittee called a meeting for tomorrow to take up the nominations, in the hope that they mav be presented to the senate and confirmed at the present special session. Republican leaders were not pleased with theelectlons, because there is only one Republican protectionist, Mr. Culbert-son. Culbert-son. on the commission, and because Professor Pro-fessor Taussig of Massachusetts, the only representative- of the greatest manufacturing manufac-turing center of the country, Is a free trader. j |
