The railroads rail-roads of the country were given ajnother i month's grace by the interstate commerce j commission to solve car shortage and con- i gestion problems. The 'commission an- ! nounced that recent drastic rules for the return of foreign cars to owning lines would be further suspended until April 15. The rules were to have become effective ef-fective tomorrow, having been suspended from February 21. Reports to the commission indicate that the railroads are making considerable headway in clearing away congestion and that enforcement of the proposed rules 1 may not be necessary. 1 Reports to the American Railway asso-; asso-; elation from virtually every railroad in the country, made public today, place the total of loaded and empty freight cars tied up by congestion throughout the United States on March 3 at 123.063, a reduction of 20,487 during the week ending that date. The reports show that the number tied up has decreased approximately 2S per cent since February IT. Effects of the work toward relieving congestion which the railroads are conducting in connection with their "cleanup week." officials say, will show a further reduction. |
