Show D. & R. G. BLACKSMITHS WALK OUT OF SHOPS Kefusal of Company to Grant Increase in Hourly Pay Is Cause of Strike. In connection with a general movement move-ment on the part of employees of the Denver & Rio Grande in the blacksmith black-smith department, sixty-two blacksmiths black-smiths and blacksmiths' helpers walked out at the local shops of the company yesterday morning. Altogether approximately approx-imately 200 men employed in this department de-partment at various points op the Denver Den-ver & Rio Grande system quit work yesterday morning. The cause of the walkout, according to information given out by railroad officials last night, was the refusal of the company to grant an increase of 8 cents an hour in wages. At a conference confer-ence of the machinists of the company with the officials in Denver a few weeks ago the blacksmiths were granted grant-ed an increase of 5 cents an hour, and it was believed that the danger of a strike had been averted. The blacksmiths, black-smiths, however, later decided to decline de-cline the proffered increase and hold out for their original demands. No steps were taken by the company vesterdav to replace the striking workmen, work-men, and it was asserted by railroad oflieials last night that no plan of action ac-tion had been decided upon. Besides the blacksmiths and helpers in the Salt Lake shops, those employed at Helper, Pueblo, Alamosa and Burnham shops are involved. |
