Show If IK WILL GET MLJIO WORK Forty-third Will Encamp in Emigration Canyon for Firing Practice. Arrangements were completed yesterday yes-terday by Captain W. S. Mapes, commander of the Third battalion, Forty-second infantry, to take his men up Emigration canyon early next week and give them some field practice in firing rifle grenades, field cooking and other field work that will be done just as it will be done on the battlefield in Europe Eu-rope when the soldiers reach there. The rifle grenade firing will be an actual demonstration of real warfare procedure, as the real grenades such as are used most effectively by the English Eng-lish and French riflemen in the front trenches will be used in the practice work. Tho actual date of this field work ' has not been determined by Captain Mapes, and probably will not be publicly pub-licly announced, in order to guard against danger through idle spectators crowding to the field. The rifle grenade is a small bomb, Bimilar to the hand grenade, but, instead in-stead of being thrown by hand, as are the larger bombs, it is fired from a rifle, the grenade bursting over the ranks or trenches of the enemy and hurling death-dealing fragments in ev-erv ev-erv direction. These grenades will be thrown by the rifles a distance of probably 300 vards and exploded over a given spot, which will represent in theory the location loca-tion of an anemy trench or line of fighters which it is desired to dislodge. Firing these grenades so as to land them in a given spot and explode them with the desired effect is no easy matter mat-ter and requires considerable practice and experience on the part of the soldiers. sol-diers. This grenade work is a highly important function of the infantry soldier sol-dier on the battlefield, and Captain Mapes is going to give his soldiers as much drill in this form of fighting as he can. A suitable location will be selected in Emigration canyon where there will be no danger to anyone from the exploding ex-ploding of the grenades and the soldiers sol-diers will try their skill at placing the grenades at the given target. . In addition to the grenade work, there .will be field cooking and mess, just as the soldiers are compelled to have on the actual battlefield. The grenade work will be given in the morning and the soldiers will remain out on their hike and field drill most of the day. |
