Show SURVIVORS OF CHIC REACH BRITISH PORT SHIELDS, ICnpland. April 10. J 1 :45 p. m. Survivors of the British steamer Chic, which was torpedoed and sunk recently while on a voyage from Halifax for Manchester Man-chester with a cargo of pulp, havo arrived ar-rived hero. In an interview with the Paily Gazette the men say the steamer was fired on without warning by a Ger-rurui Ger-rurui submarine, two of the shots taking effect. The suhmarlne then submerged. Seventeen members of the crew of the steamer look to a life boat, which capsized cap-sized and one of the men was drowned. The fcoamen nay that while tho captain of the Chic and his officers and part of the crew still were on board the steamer the submarine came up again Hoso to the vessel and without warning discharged dis-charged a torpedo and again submerged. The Chic Immediately began to sink and those on board took to a gig. The gig became separated from the life boats with the other members of the crew during a rtorm and still is missing. |
