Show ! THE DIARY OF A SIREN CLARA'S WITCHING WAY By RING W. LAKDNEE. AUGUST 13. WELL diary heer we are at Maeatawa, Myrtle Killen and I, and we have two whole weeks to stay here but of course we can go on to somewhere else if we do not like it here, but I am sure we are goiug to like it here or at least I am for ail I want is a quiet time and not be bothered with members of the opposite sex and the problems they are always bringing up. 1 suppose sup-pose Myrtle was surprised at my conversation with her on that subject sub-ject coming over on the boat last night. There was a couple of nice looking young gentlemen on the boat and' Myrtle remarked on how clean cut looking thev both w-ere. "Yes," I replied, ''but the. question ques-tion of men does not trouble me any more. '" ' "What is the idea?" replied Myrtle. I COULD not explain to her on account ac-count of having promised Len-nie Len-nie to not mention our engagement, so I merely said: "I am "tired of men and have come here for a rest." "I bet you have a man on your staff before we have been at Maca-tawa Maca-tawa two days." she replied. "I w-ould take your bet only it would not be fair," I replied. "It would be like stealing, for I have made up my mind and can not be shaken m this determination." "All right," she replied, "yon can turn them all over to me." She smiled as if she was talking in iest, but I know she meant her words in earnest for Myrtle is really man crazv and poor girl has never had much luck in seeureing their attentions. Well she may have all the men she -an get to look at her as long as they leave me alone to mv thoughts and the problems that have come up to trouble me in the past few weeks. " AUG. 15. WENT in bathing down on the beach this A. M. and would of had a glorious time only for Myrtle, Myr-tle, who has got the idea that a beach was made for a place to indulge in-dulge in flirtation, and if she had her way w-ould never grasp the opportunity op-portunity to enjoy thc exilarating affects of the water so long as there was men around to talk to. Luckily, or rather unluckily, for she, poor girl, there was no chance for her to pick up a masculine acquaintance, though the two good looking voting men who was on the boat as well as several others looked at me several times and would of spoken to me had 1 of given them so much as a glance of encouragement, but 1 am not one of those kind of girls that picks up acquaintance with strange young men at a summer resort and at all times I insist on a formal introduction, but at present would not even allow that on account of my resolve to make mv stav here a real rest. Received a short note this P. M. from Lennio. He is back in Chicago with the nine and I imagine im-agine his feelings was hurt by me going away from the citv at this time, though he was to proud to mention it. -but I cannot help it as this is the last vacation I will take before I enter on mv life -work as his helpmate and besides I am doing nothing to which he could fiDd any exceptions. Also received a post card from poor Ray. AUG. 16. OPENT the A. M. mailing post J cards to my real friends in Chicago. Also sent one to Ray as I see no reason why I should not give him what little pleasure is possible pos-sible under the circumstances. While I wa"s writeing the post cards Myrtle said she would wait for me on the front porch and imagine im-agine my feelings when I came down to nnd out that there was two men sitting with her the same two that had given me those glances on the boat and down on the beach. Myrtle got up and introduced them to me and as a matter of politeness to her I had to bow to them and then sit down and chat, but I did not allow the conversation to encage in personalitvs. Their names"are Pred Bolton and Charles Sargent. The latter is the best looking of the two, Mr. Bolton haveing a weak mouth. Mr. Sargent seemed to forget for-get all about Mvrtle the minute I joined their little partv. This P. M. while I was reading the Cosmopolitan Mr. Sargent and Mr. Bolton and Myrtle all came strolling up to where I was sitting and Mr. Sargent asked me would I go over to the club and dance with him tonight. I was on the point of refusing when Myrtle said I must go because Mr. Bolton had already asked her and she had accepted. So there was nothing for me to do but accept out of fairness to Mvrtle, but 1 must give her a good talking to when she conies upstairs to dress. |
