Grant, chief of police, spoke to a large audience in the assembly hall at Labor temple last night on the problem of fialt Lake City's unemployed. The gathering was held under tho direction of an organization known as "the Liberal club. W. G. Lemon, secretary of the club, presided. Chief Grant was the principal speaker. For the most part they were purely argumentative argu-mentative and delivered in mild tones. One speaker, who said he was' a member mem-ber of the I. W. V., contributed the only inflammatory number to the programme, urging unemployed men to "demand a living, and let no law stand In your way of getting It." O. J. Jackson, recognized leader of many unemployed, exhorted his hearers to continue tu. refuse to work for the city for fl.50 per day, declaring ibis to be a "scab wage." Applause which followed fol-lowed Indicated that his sentiments were heartily endorsed by the crowd. Chief Grant announced after the meeting meet-ing that he has no intention of changing chang-ing his attitude or increasing the offer of $1.50 per day, which the city commission com-mission has made to the unemployed through him. Tho commission has appropriated appro-priated $50u for temporary relief of men out of employment, but this cum will be expended only for service at the wages offered. Many women attended last night's meeting, and nearly all trades unions and labor organizations were represented.
