Show 80 THEY PLANTED tiie trees on alie school grounds DAY A giong procession of child ren ceremonies at the several schools eight hundred strong headed by the enterprise band marched the school children of the several districts of provo yesterday morning arbor day as an noan ced brought out the immense army of little ones and the crowds of eager spectators that thronged thron ged the streets ahe morning was serenely calm and the sight of the parade was grand to witness promptly at 10 the children from the various districts under the management of their teachers marched to the court house square and formed in file of twos divided into divisions of which teachers were commanders every child large and small wore a neat boquet of red and white emblematic of free school education and in their hands they carried a wand with the aade colors neatly braided around the rod which they used to measure the proper distances apart in the procession heading the procession ware fifth reader and gram mar grades bearing an elegant banner with the inscription DAY he who plants a tree plants hope an d on the other side aanon DAY she who plants a treo plants hope never on babool occasions was there greater zeal and precision exhibited in than on this occasion occa Bion every teacher and pupil entered wholly into the occasion and success crowned their efforts master giles with ans tune and cutaway swallow fork the big guns and gen challed the small machinery as in the branks the clanking of spades shovels and hoes gave signal that an engagement was at hand some carried trees as they marched but none were sour apple trees nor innocent cherry sapling no weeping willows nor sun flower trees alie procession about a half mile long marched around one block retired to the court house square and engaged in a cale drill and songs after which each school ward returned to its house aad criag ed in alie ceremonies of planting and naming the trees in the mayor booth sup er wilson Professor Brimhall professor giles and various other friends of education figured prominently HOUSE at 11 a m alie central school was the principal point of attraction where hundreds of people had gathered to wit ness the erand formal ceremonies the large recitation roum on the north wai crowded to overflowing and in a few moments the choir rian a selection and the following announcement was read by one of the pupils we the representatives of the school children of the united states meet today to do our share toward making our country moe mo e beautiful and fertile A treeless yard or street is unsightly and desolate dea and how much more so is a whole district or city without trees believing that the wholesale destruction of trees is an injury to our land and wishing to make the place where we live more beautiful we now ones cut down by new thrifty and aig orous youths after the adoption of the foregoing a verse of an original poem written for the occasion waa recited most pleasingly sir brimhall then prevented a beautiful oil painting from mrs jane bee jones to the school it represents greys elegy in a country church yard and is presented to the school by mrs jones struck up a lively march the several departments marched out in order charts and firt readers to the side of the yard the second readers to the west side the third readers to the east side and the fifth reader and grammer grade to the south each department had ita pro gramme and ceremony and under the dictation of its teacher proceeded at once to the ceremonies of planting the trees there were about trees planted at the central school half poplar and half white aaa the latter were planted on the inside and the poplar on the outside of the fence at tho treo the students formed in a proceedings of the day will be placid on record and kept as a piece of the school and in the next term the names and biographies of the authors will be studied bv the pupils EO that in all arbor day will be looked to with as much pride by the school children as any other holiday in all the affair was a grand success and parent should have missed witnessing the grand ceremonies of arbor day the
