Show THE PRIMARY MEETING editor of the A certain man of this town was heard some time ago lamenting his own death his political death caused by thedas bage of the edmunds law on thaoe casion also he was criticizing criticising critic ising severely the action of the city convention of two years ago and in the course of his conversation he impressed the listener with alie idea that he being now barred from holding office or voting henceforth it donld bo his province to at others who do take part in local political affairs withal however he is a good citizen and lias the public weal at heart but like some others of our community this man was not informed of the extent to which the edmunds act had shorn him of his political privileges since 82 none of the primary meetings of the peoples party had been attended by him and of course he had nut been a member or in a position to bo one of any of the nominating conventions thus there was one vote and one voice less in the advocacy of good government but why dwell on this individual case there are scores alio think and act in a similar manner under the mistaken impression that the recent law prohibits polygamists from attending caucuses or irom taking part in primary meetings or from being delegates to nominating conventions vent ions many of our able men stay at home it is alie right and duty of every member of the peoples party to participate in the political proceedings of his party BO far as he is permitted under tho law and now mr editor at the risk of talking about that which every one is supposed to know already let us briefly state alie object of alie primary meeting aside from the district school meetings alie primary meeting is the place where about once a year all citizens may express their desires regarding their f local governmental affairs and choose delegates to alie city or county convention tho cae may be these delegates meet on a certain day and name men for office As much depends upon the choice of candidates for office which the delegates make it ia important that these delegates be wise representative men of the community it is proper also that the delegation appointed at a primary meeting be instructed by the voters as to what kind of men shall be placed in nomination because generally the people have a certain line of policy which they carried out in their city or county government and therefore they want auch men elected as will respect the de frires of constituents in fact these meetings mee tinga dro the most demo crati cof any in which alio people take part for here the citizen may freely discuss public matters criticism criticise critic ise that which has been wrong in the past speak of the abuses or evils of the present and say what ought to be done or left undone in the future here if a man has influence it can be used in behalf of virtuous government his vote will count one in that direction alie wise and intelligent tell igent man will go to alie primary meeting and if ho has any suggestions to make lie may state them recommending them with his best ability one good recommendation or one straight vote at a primary is worth one hundred criticisms on the street corner after an election is over KEELER |
