the first degree for shooting W S kingsley this case is one of the most sensational and has more peculiar features in it than any which has developed in the state of iowa billings is a mn of 45 years of age and was a respected lawyer in the town of waverly his wife was a woman of fine figure and with many charms of feature and manner but a bood deal younger than her husband will kingsley was ant 25 years of age but brilliant to a degree a law graduate and BO well read and popular that be was easily successful in keing elected county attorney the two men at one time held an office together and bad business relations one day two weeks ago billings called at kingsleys King office suddenly the passers b en the street were stanlcy by the report of pistol shots and edward billings came running down j crying out that hingeley Kin geley had shot him citizens ran up stairs and i entering office found him dead on the floor with a bullet in his brain billings claimed that the dead man had shot himself A month previous to this billings had the young attorney arrested the warrant charging him with seduction it being sworn toby a girl in poor circumstances she afterward confessed the charge was not true and that billings had induced her to swear 10 the warrant from the testimony adduced at the inquest on kingsley it developed that billings bad set about effecting the ruin of in the most manner he bad forged bis own cifes names to notes directed to the lawyer the contents of the notes full of loving terms and asking kingsley to meet her at her own house while billings was away kingsley replied in good faith declining to make assignation and warning the supposed female writer to desist from her course of course the reply fell into the bands of bil the latter even went so far on express time the strike philadelphia nearly one thousand men employed in and around the extensive freight depot of the beading railroad Eail road company at willow street wharf went oufa on a strike this morning this action of the men was in pursuance of the orders of the various local assemblies knights of labor last evening to support the order of the beading convention ven tion to beading pa dec 31 most extraordinary tra ordinary efforts were made by the strikers in the coal regions and in philadelphia today to day to induce the men in the in this city to strike telegrams innumerable were sent here making all sorts of promises of support and pledging that if the beading men would join in the strike it would extend to every station all over the reading system these telegrams were all answered by stem refusal the small percentage of those in favor of the strike not daring to go out advises advices from the coal regions today to day say the most serious difficulty is on the shamokin Sha and mathony division where hardly a dozen men are at work in mathony valley there are standing loaded coal cars unable to be moved |
