Show m IX the washington star calls attention to statistics gotten out by the census office regarding tho jews in this country A special schedule was prepared calling for details of age sex conjugal condition place of birth occupation etc of each person in the family reported who waa living on the of december 1889 and of certain details concerning births marriages and deaths occurring in the family for the five years ended on that date copies of tho same were distributed to tho heads of jewish families in all parts of the united states the necessary names having previously bean obtained from rab bles of congregations and officers of different societies though the inquiry is necessarily mora or less incomplete the returns of completed family schedules shows living persons on the day of december 1889 and in these families there had been 2148 marriages births and 2062 deaths during the five years ending that date the social condition of the families indicated to somo extent by the number of servants kept by them and as about two thirds are reported as keeping one or more servants the families reported may be said to bo in easy circumstances iho average number of persons to each family on december 31 1889 was and the average annual number for the civo years covered by these statistics was the aver ago annual number of marriages per 1000 of total population was much lower than the general rate being but 74 as against 18 to 22 per 1000 in the eastern states average age at marriage is greater than among the general population the low marriage rate and the increased aberago age at marriage are the principal reasons for the low birth gatei abo deaths reported for the civo years give an average annual death rate of per 1000 of population being about half of tho average rate for the general population the expectation of life at the age of 10 years based upon the death rate for the year 1889 is and years for males and females respectively as against and as calculated by lifo insurance companies for the general population of the country the birth and death rates for those of native born and for eign born parents indicates that the birth rate is decreasing and the death rate increasing inci easing with more pro longed residence in this country but the general results indicate that the jews hero retain many of the peculiarities liari ties which have been noted among them iu europe tho fact is a jew is a jew the world over and the highest civilization or the different customs of the many nations among which ho is found do not materially change his original characteristics if all the jews could be gathered home tomorrow to their native land there would bo nothing in the way of their nature cementing them as one DC 0 plo they might come in tho differ ent habits of dross of the several countries in chieh they are found they might take with them the different arts and modes of gaining a livelihood in which they have been schooled abroad but they would take with them enough of the jewish nature to unite all in the strong bands of a patriotic nation organization would come natural to them and in a short time jewish institutions would flourish as of yore no other people under the sun can boast such unity such bofo for nationality tiona lity as the jews take he people of any other country under the sun place them among the different nations and one or two generations aboa thorn en grafted into the class of humanity among which they dwell so completely that yon can hardly toll from whence they came we see this in america with all nations excepting the jews |
