Show through an eugina THE VICTIMS ROASTED ALIVE charred flesh drops from the burnt bodies CHICAGO sept 24 five innocent lives paid the penalty of the wanton carelessness of a railroad engineer at tho corner of vincennes avenue and eighty seventh street in this city this evening A suburban train on the aock island road leaving the chicago depot at leaves every evening at this point a washington bights coach is to be caught up by the evening the car was left as usual when a moment later the passengers were horrified to see bearing down upon them at the rate of twenty miles an hour a heavy freight train on the some road there was no time for flight the engineer reversed his engine but with almost undiminished speed it plowed into the passenger coach until the locomotive was hidden entirely in the wreck wild chieka and gioana an bounced the horror of the disaster and of the steam formed in thick clouds around the scene the terrified spectators realized that the ill fated passengers were being roasted alive willing hands lent all assistance possible but the engineer having failed to shut off steam the steam chest was blown out by the shock of the collision and the death dealing vapor hissed forth ceaselessly for nearly an hour strange to say not a person was killed by the collision the loss of life being solely attributed to the scalding steam that enveloped the coach the dead as taken out were i found to be literally roasted tho I 1 flesh dropped from hands and limbs and glaring eyes told horror of the experience when a thorough search had been completed it was found that three ladies and two gentlemen had been killed outright and another man was in a dying condition six other per sons were seriously injured the latter six unfortunates were hurriedly conveyed to their homes near at hand while the dying man was taken to the institute of tha sisters of mercy the five dead were conveyed to the morgue the list of killed is mrs kelley G mckenzie fred huebner mrs brown and an unknown women all of washington heights those moat seriously injured are gus mulcahy seventy sixth and wallace street fatally hurt miss A W steele anton and parker harden of washington heights the others hurt sustained but slight injuries the wreck appears to have been entirely due to the almost criminal carelessness of engineer the passenger train was on time the signals were cut at semaphore and yet tho freight train regardless of time or signal plunged into the coach running at a speed of twelve miles an hour within the city limits both and his fireman lumped and escaped the engineer has disappeared |
