Show THE mississippi last week a alvee convention composed of three hundred delegates planters of the mississippi valley met in vicksburg the whole week was taken up in discussion of the mississippi river and to try to devise some plan of drainage that wiil prevent th annual damage done by the mighty stream through it the country along its course resolutions were adopted reciting that the sippi ia the receptacle and channel to the ocean of twenty five states and ter the whole country between the rocky and mountains that the changed condition of this vast region wrought by ag ri culture precipitates every year more rapidly into this channel the s surface waters and that the mississippi river is of genera welfare to the county as a channel for transportation therefore it i a national feature oer which the federal government should take complete control the convention further condemned a proposed new out lat by engineers and unanimously favored the strengthening of the levees as the only esnard to the country A delegation was choslen to apy the matter before congress and thursday it arrived at washington the character of the river natural ly makes the question national and the fact is that levering leve eing has practically been under control of a national commission for many years millions have been expended on levees and hereunto they have proven inadequate to prevent tho river from overflowing and doing vast damage to the country millions more may be expanded on levees w th equally futile results so fast as the banks of a stream are raised the deposits in the bed of the river will rise in proportion and it has been proven that in a short time a river will by these means elevate itself above the Burro country levering Leve eing is in itself an insufficient safeguard safe guard |
