Show fe 1 y H 3 dyska Een miler granted a writ of habeas corpus preparations FOR HIS DEATH how he spends hia time Stran fie belief of indians in a coming christ his looks AUBURN N Y april 29 special the career of wm Ke is gradually approaching its termination and nothing but a respite from the government can save him from the terrible exi pediment peri ment tomorrow to morrow he fully realizes his position and meet his fate unflinchingly he has no callers and no flowers there are no sentimental visitors to lionize him and wake him the hero of alie hour there are no delicacies and no dainty dinners from admiring friends instead of all this there are the cheerless walls of his dismal cell to contemplate the glimpse lie may catch of passersby passers by on the street seventy five feet away the laborious study of his pictorial bible aba occasional visits of the wardens wife and his spiritual advisers and the continual presence of his death watch left alone then as he practically is on the awful fate that awaits him it would be small wonder if the man should become nervous as as the day of execution approaches and that he way to some manner of emotion but not once has he shown any signs of weakening and in fact be rather courts death than shuns it the arrangements for the final act in the tragedy are substantially completed the present quarters of kemmler and the roam where he is to die are side by side in the main front of the pr ision and from his cell door to the fatal chair is a distance of about 18 feet alie death chamber is about 17 feet wide by 25 feet long and is dimly lighted by the small iron grated windows about 5 feet above the floor aad from which a view of the main entrance of the prison can be obtained between the windows on the east wall is a long board about 10 feet in length and 3 or 4 feet high on the board are arranged mechanical appliances for testing measuring and governing the death dealing current at the lett is a common electric push button which communicates with the dynamo i room and is used for signaling next on the right is a candrews Car drews volt meter a long black walnut box containing coiled wire and surmounted by a guage which registers the electric volta another box long and narrow is on the right and contains a reducing coil to diminish the force of electricity before it enters the volt meter on the lamp box on the right between the reducer and volt meter ia a small switch to turn the current off and on the meter the lamp box contains twenty four 16 candle power incandescent lamps and shows when the current is on and running steadily then come two switches one for short circuiting the curre t and the other fatal switch which can the current to the wires connecting hii the boda of the condemned two at the top connect with a dynamo couo feet away in the north wing of the prison one of the wires at the botton will be connected with the metal cap to be worn on the head and the other will be adjusted to the base of Kemm lers spine at present these two wires hang dangling from the ceiling they will be attached to a board 3 feet square attached to the ceiling which is already ia position and which is directly over the spot where the chair is to be placed there was no sign of a chair about the building but there is no doubt that it is all ready to be placed in position at a moments notice yesterday while the warden and the reporter were in the fatal chamber the low murmur of voices could be heard through the closed door which connects with the prisoners cell it was keeper mcnaughton and kemmler in conversation there was also heard the steady tramp of the boatti watch as lie pasted up and down in the corridor in front of the cell warden durston has invited the following gentlemen to be present and will notify them in time tu get here drs carter E mcdonald At and J C the commissioners that recommended the use of electricity in executions are also invited their names are elbridge T gerry matthew hale of new york city and dr south wick of buffalo the warden is allowed to invite twenty one persons to be present consisting of twelve reputable citizens not to exceed seven assistants si stants and not to exceed two aby aicia ns the law futher prescribes that the following persons may also be admitted the judge of the court in which kemmler was convicted the district attorney and sheriff of the country keelor is allowed to invite two clergymen the entire number of persons therefore who are allowed by the law to witness the execution is twenty seven at pm kemmler has just bade a final adieu to mrs Di irston the wife of the warden he te a hearty dinner with seeming relish everything is in readiness and he will probably die at dawn tomorrow to morrow morning |
