Show Abdul Hamid an Unhappy Man . BY GEOEGE FRASER. Special Cable to The Tribune. ST. PETERSBURG. Sopl. 17. The nn-happicst nn-happicst man on earth is Abdul Hamld. the deposed sultan of Turkey. The former for-mer despot of Turkpy Is shivering with fear for his life. Ho Is in hourly dread of assassination by his enemies. Since ho was sent into' exile, nearly eighteen months ago. lie has never shown himself at any of the windows of tho villa. He dare not. for ho Is convinced that he would be shot by one of his foes If he were seen. Neither advice nor entreaties, nor even stringent medical orders, will induco him to leave the house and take exercise In the garden. Not only does he remain stubbornly Indoors, hut nothing will make him leave the llrst floor of the villa. He fears to trust himself to the ground lloor lest bombs be concealed In the cellars beneath. Ho will not go up to the second sec-ond floor, for he thinks the villa might be set on lire and he would perish before be-fore lie could escape. A victim to insomnia, he never undresses, un-dresses, but his thin, bowed figure Is seen wandering during the night from room to room until llnally Abdul Ilarnld falls exhausted and slumbers fitfully on a couch. Mo works as a carpenter during dur-ing the day. nnd recently ho finished making a largo wardrobe Strang'dy enough, his one desire Is to find a purj-chnsor purj-chnsor for It. h is not that he iweds thr money, but he longs to convince himself him-self that the work of his hands is of monetary value. Ho begs his warders for leave to send the wardrobe away from the villa to be sold, but his request is refused Invariably. The Turkish government gov-ernment fcara thnt within tho woodwork there may be concealed some undesirable communication to his friends. Abdul Hamld knows nothing of the outside world. Neither he nor tho two wives and the servants who followed him into captivity are allowed to read any newspaper. 'Abdul Humid Is Intensely lonely. Abdul Rachlm. the only son who followed him Into i-aplhity. has deserted him, declaring that ids father was so petulant and nervous Hint no one could endure life in his vicinity. Tiurhnnn ed Din. his favorlti- son. to whom ho desired de-sired to leave his crown, has repudiated his father, accusing him of having caused the death of ills mother, because Abdul Hamld refused to summon a competent medical man to attend her In her Illness. |
