Show M THE HOLY jasd progress in preach the caspel HOW THE JEWS ARE BELIEVING thirty converts made to mormonism the following is a letter from president F F hintze dated at constantinople stantin ople addressed to president george Taa adale and which appears in a late issue of the millennial star first of all I 1 feel to thank god conr heavenly father for his many blessings and favors in preserving me on my journey by land and by water that I 1 have abely arrived at conr home here in this extensive trip over miles has been of great use to mo I 1 havo now a bet ur understanding of the country and its peoples and what they may need and bow to the elders I 1 have found many people anxious to hear and have borne my testimony to thousands and feel encouraged that a work will yet be done here just how many may join is of course a secret but I 1 know that if we warn the people we do our doty and god will draw his own and rive us increase i with the elders who came last I 1 am well pleased we will now be able to test our work hero after these elders have labored here for a few years we shall be able to know if the people desire tho gostol or not personally I 1 fal a great desiro that they get fall opportunity to this end I 1 labor elders smart and jimmona and brother dieterie Di eteri are appointed to labor at they are there now at I 1 remained rubout three months the gospel was well investigated by many two were baptized and others chained that they were convert but for several reasons baptized to be baptized just now requires a good deal of courage we have ao rights and one being baptized is liable to imprisonment and banishment indefinitely taxes are also increased besides the usual hatred and eions common to the cause of truth everywhere the personality of god was thoroughly discussed at anel though a stumbling block to abany yet it did I 1 look for our labors to bear good fruits later on perhaps it is well that not many are baptized just yet because the government interfered with us perhaps thinking our consuls would not assist us but we received the necessary aid and established confidence then we were forbidden to preach without governmental permission this has made but little difference so far as the elders dont understand the language and cannot be stopped from talking in their own house jask how we shall get the necessary permission I 1 do not know but trust to god for guidance and help to petition the government is a tedious job I 1 ought to employ an attorney we need the permission or we may be ordered out and our local help is much worse off than we having no defense whatever of course we have god but he may require us to work with the government to bring out the necessary permission may I 1 hire an attorney to assist A good attorney here will of course not be so very expensive but hip services will cost something we need to get upon sure footing as soon aa possible about the first question asked by the native i hav you a government license brother reports one baptism and some applications from the natives to be baptized the future will tell more of that field it is certainly a prominent one elder locander ia at antioch his oase ig an unfortunate one he arrived on foot without a penny I 1 was compelled to assist him financially as you will see from the report I 1 am afraid ho will be obliged to leave should he not receive immediate kielp from homo here in constantinople the work has collapsed I 1 will see what can bo done three have been cut off brother stauffer is here he should have gone with elder clove ant as the latter was not able to go he will atay here and sandy turkish previous to going brother an is here and faithful and should nothing be done regarding printing he will be sent into the country if we should do much translating his labors would be needed here he has been a faithful help to brother clove personally I 1 intend to use all my influence and power for the advancement van cement of the mission I 1 believe we are sent hero to open up the mission by all honorable means if bl and not to alose it we have had many reverse and many troubles to overcome ant we have yet a chance to lift our voices in a good cause I 1 dalire to improve tie chance peradventure god may give us grace and a faw to be saved here also individually I 1 feel well and desire to do my duty I 1 know I 1 am very imperfect and make many mistakes but I 1 know nry desire I 1 is good and that my heart is engaged in the up building of christs kingdom i one thing I 1 desiro particularly to I 1 mention nearly all the elders came bore partly discouraged from what they have beard concerning thi a mission when elders thus come halt look upon everything with doubt and I 1 have seen instances where they ne got oyer it but it mad them ill missionary labor must be fully sustained or let alone brothers and Sherea ian have responded to their calls to gospel but in the present situation I 1 trill let brother Shere nian remain at home until I 1 can ond him companion from zion he is a man with a fine testimony to cum up with I 1 can only eay I 1 am hopeful and do not feel to give up at all our mission is taking the right by degrees and by gods help we will prosper I 1 look back upon my labors with satisfaction I 1 know they have been honestly and performed if we should only succeed in saving one soul our labors and money spent will be well paid I 1 see by the record that there have been 30 baptisms should only 10 remain faithful what a joy for us all |
