Show MUNICIPAL TAXATION. It is noteworthy that those who aro making the outcry against tho municipal munici-pal tax levy of Salt Lake City this year are those who want to handicap the city and do not want municipal improvements improve-ments or additional water supply. They don't, want the city to grow. The-want The-want a grievance against tho American party. They are determined to have one, and it is just as well siuco this determination de-termination is manifest, for tho American Ameri-can part- to give them their griovauco in a small increase in tho tax levy for tho purpose of bettering the water supply. sup-ply. As Mayor Bransford explicitly explains, ex-plains, it is for this beneficial purpose that tho raiso of two mills is made. It is also- manifest that tho reason why this added water supply is needed is because be-cause of the increased population, tho increased number of water users, the additional houses that require wator supply. And as long as this is tho case, as long us the growth of tho city compels com-pels the added water supply, tho reason rea-son wiry tho tax incroaso is made is evident evi-dent to every ono, and is easily, explained ex-plained "to the satisfaction of every loyal and intelligent citizen of Salt Lake Cit In Provo, tho Citj' Council passed a levy calling for eighteen mills taxation. Salt Lake's now lcvj- for city purposes is fifteen mills. And yet tho mayor of Provo vetoed the eighteen mill levy because it was not high enough. He insists that there shall be a greater levy than eighteen mills, and ho refuses to approve the smaller levy becauso it is not sufficient. And Provo is not a growing grow-ing city like Salt Lake, cither. We notice that Mayor Glasmann of Ogdcn is also much discontented with tho Salt Lake Cit' municipal tax levy. But the people of Ogden will recall that thoy are under tho disadvantage of having hav-ing Mr. Glasmann for Mayor, nnd wo doubt not they would bo willing to pay tho difference if they could get rid of him. Certainly Salt Lake would willingly will-ingly pay the difference between the Salt Lake tax levy and that of Ogden rather than have him at the head of its city administration. |
