Show THE DEEP WATER HARBOR some correspondence the appropriation made through the kindness of mr V C A smoot jr of the utah legislature we are in receipt of a copy f a letter sent to bailly D johnson esq from john II 11 senator from texas which will explain itself STATES SE VATE washington D C feb 25 1890 J ESQ salt lake city utah dear sir your letter of alie dinst enclosing the signed by gen hon john A Clernard Mc and others in favor of alie jeep water harbor on the coat of the of mexico is received it affords me pleasure to aay the senates committee on commerce has unanimously reported a bill appropriating for the making of a deep water harbor as recommended by the united states engineer commission at the port of galveston in the dissuasion of this subject before the committee it was very clearly indicated that when trev came to act on the river and harbor bill they will recommend liberal appropriations for the improvement of the harbora at sabine pass and at arandas aransas pass I 1 feel specially obliged to yourself and the gentlemen who have authorized yon to forward this petition and will present it to the senate accompanied bv your letter in the momin ff very respectfully JOHN H REAGAN following is the bill be it enacted etc that for the purpose of se curin the work of improving the entrance to galveston Gal harbor texas the secretary of war upon the application of alie chief of engineers is authorized in his discretion to draw bis warrant of requisition from time to time upon the secretary of the treasury for such sums as may be necessary to do such work not to exceed in the aggregate the amount estimated as necessary for the completion of the same ag shown in the reports of the chief of engineers for ehg year 1889 provided however that the amounts eo drawn from the treasury shall not exceed in any one year and that any itemized statement of said expand ture shall accompany the annual report of ahn chief of engineers the amount required for the completion of thia work as herein proposed is hereby appropriated out of any money in the treasury not otherwise abed the above bill has been placed on the calendar and will undoubtedly pass the senate some time in march |
