Show THE CITY COUNCIL committee appointed on water works THE MAYOR ALLOWED FOR SERVICES RENDERED the question of depre the city council met in adjourned session last night with mayor dusenberry in the chair the absentees were aldermen and holdaway and councillors councilors Counci lors inanen and bean the petition of joy S park and nine others asking for the abatement of a nuisance viz cook scott cu s slaughterhouse was read alderman scott moved that the petition be referred to the committee on quarantine mr scott stated that the conditions of cleanliness which the proprietors prie tors of the slaughter house had agreed to maintain had not been complied with the slaughter house was in a filthy state numerous dead hogs had been allowed to decompose there which was anything but healthy councilor farrer stated that the committee on quarantine had visited the petitioners petition ers before alie slaughter house was established and had obtained their consent to its erection yet with the expressed understanding that it was kept in a cleanly condition the petition was referred to the committed on quarantine mayor dusenberry here read a communication ni from S J wicks of colorado springs proposing a loan of 8 bonds with which to establish water works the communication was laid on the babl P streeta and alleys to whom was referred the plat of oakdell addition to city survey recommended its approval the report was adopted the report of the committee on quarantine recommended the allowance of the claim of mrs E A alien amounting to for clothing destroyed during alio quarantine of mr A J stewart councilor farrer thought mr stewart should be waited on and requested to bear this expense alderman alexander stated that mr stewart had been approached by the marshal but had refused to do anything in the matter the report was adopted the same committee to whom was referred the claim of pynie maiben amounting to 2045 for medicines furnished A J stewart recommended the allowance of the claim and instructing the city attorney to collect the same from mr stewart the report was adopted and the amount appropriated the committee on quarantine recommended the allowance of the claim of alfred newell amounting to 1500 for one tent used by jno A wilkins for domestic quarantine purposes councilor maiben thought the city was being imposed upon in these matters the report was adopted the same committee to whom was referred the claim of the provo west coop amounting to 2050 lor goods furnished A J stewart recommended that the claim be not allowed the report was adopted the mayor read a petition sent by wm probert praying the sale of eleven acres of land owned by provo city and situated on provo bench on motion of alderman scott the petition was not granted the claim of wm lewis for whitewashing and cleaning tha city jail amounting to was allowed the application of pyne maiben for a wholesale liquor license was granted alderman scott moved the mayor appoint a committee on water works he considered that the timo had fully arrived when provo city should possess a system jo water works the city could fell afford to expend a few hundred dollars for plans the motion prevailed and the mayor appointed aldermen scott and alexander and councilor maiben as said committee tho claim of city surveyor thos davis amounting to 1250 was allowed alio mayor here directed tile attention of the council to the ordinance referring to the salary of city cited his own case aa an instance and stated that something should be done by the city by way of recompense he did not care whether it was by salary or by the jires of a claim he had not button holed any person particularly in the matter but it biad come up incidentally in conversation aa to what salary he was receiving for the dulias he discharged as mayor and of course he had to reply eliat he got nothing strangers and others in fact had estimated that at least one fourth of his time was spent for the city and that he should receive a salary of per annum if his time WAS not worth anything to provo it was certainly worth something to himself alderman alexander suggested that the mayor submit a claim for services rendered up to date councilor farrer thought this the best way as the council had not been able to estimate the time spent by the mayor the clerk then read the claim of the mayor for services rendered amounting to which on motion of councilor farrer was allowed alderman alexander spoke in ence to reducing the number of members comprising the city council lie ad vacated the reduction and the allowing of a salary councilor farrer thought the work of the city would be more performed if the number of the council was reduced and a reasonable amount allowed as compensation for services the revenue of the city tuo small to pay a just compensation to alie number comprising the present council tha matter was deferred for future consideration council adjourned till next monday evening at 7 |
