Show territorial balfe utah county walks away with the baggage PROVO IS AWARDED THE PAIA for PRETTY GIRLS henrichsen Henrich seu the potter leads the territory in earthenware the orLd fair held in salt lake city thi year may be without reservation pronounced a big success mayor armstrong bays that about people visited the exhibition buildings the gates receipts footed up that is a good showing to give anything like a full description of the fair would take more room than is afforded by the entire columns of the ENQUIRER therefore a few general remarks will b given and then matters of local interest will be treated the stock exhibits were of a splendid eplen did grade and showed much improvement in horses cattle and cheep throughout the territory on the grounds in various places all sorts of machinery for the road farm and mothr uses was displayed and attracted a great deal 01 attention and praise As might well be supposed the inside exhibits exhibit a drew more attention than what were seen in the although there has been finer displays in some departments in former years the stalls and stands this season looked excellent and gave general satisfaction in the line of homemade home made articles the displays were very creditable the woolen mills exhibits were of a most excellent character they included samples of goods from the beaver des aret and provo factories the provo samples we reset out just to the left of the main entrance and were an attraction that did great credit to our town in manufactured wares provo seemed to have taken the lead pottery walked off with the only prize given in that line the displays were classified into three assortments fruit jars terra cotta and flower pots A salt lake pottery ware establishment had a few specimens which it requested by a large placard the public not to handle this did not euit the provo potter for on discovering it he immediately had a large sign painted in big letters exhibits from provo pottery you caa handle them without fear of breaking that sign made the salt lake moulder sick other exhibits in the way of home manufactured things eatables drink ables wea and ornaments were among the beet displays in the fairand aliey were of such excellent character as to scoop in lota of the prizes on the same floor with the above class of goods were the floral and produce display the plants flowers and fruits were not up to the standard better exhibits having been seen at former fairs the fruit aa liht be expected fell behind also although there were eor ie beautiful specimens on the shelves ind tables the vegetables cheese and butter display were excellent our enterprising and unique cluzen clas getting away with valuate prize for having the largest and finest display of products the prize was a large and magnificent nickle plated monarch acorn stove among the vegetables a pumpkin weighing pounds v a a noticeable feature it may ba mentioned here that Mr offered 10 to abe person who guessed without lifting it the weight of a squash on thousand four hundred people estimated the weight of that squash four exact weight 55 pounds 4 art by the name af sarah castleton was riven the in deference no doubt to hr sex the displays in athe large galleries were in the minds of many people the best part of the fair turning to the right as one climbed to the top of the stairs there laid on a big table the finest and largest grizzly bears skin ever seen in utah the animal from whose carcass the skin taken was cap bared some six months ago about awen mies northeast of aden the live weight was asoo pounds and this monarch of the mountains measured over twelve feet from tip to tip the art department occupied the south end of the gallery and while the number and variety of pictures were less than at some previous fairs there were some most excellent specimens of the brush and hanging on the walls As the eye glanced up at the large array af colora and fames the attention was sure to be first definitely attracted by life sized portrait pictures of wilford woodruff Yoo druff geo Q cannon and gov thomas the work of a mr C E peterson late of chicago so true to life were these pictures in knowing the features of tho gentlemen named that it seemed almost as they themselves were present glancing about one who loves true art and has a conception of good work had ample opportunity to be gratified in admiring such specimens as a mountain lake scene by the springville Spring ville artist john hafen it was a gem and showed great skill in the handling another piece of work equally as good but which attracted leas attention waa a painting representing ranch life in the mountains it is rarely an artist succeeds in following nature so honestly in the representation of a group of animals and people with their in viron ment as seen in thia picture the sketch shows three or four mounted cowboys in the acton corr alinga herd of wild steers there is the pele corral the log cabin the low hill back ground and all worked in with such skill and natural effect so as to evince great study and pains the picture which perli aps attracted the most atten tion was one painted by john bolm of payson it was a reproduction Dores of celebrated painting christ leaving the on it bohn must have spent years of work close beside this were fave pieces of work from the hands of greatest artist C E dallin of springville Spring ville one of these was the statue ot john L sullivan who has so long stood behind wilson knights bar in this city an exquisite little piece of sculpture work was the sleeping babe done by C 0 fresley of provo mention of which the ENQUIRER made in its last issue among the photographic exhibits those of savage and morris took the lead among savages collections was a picture of john Nic bolson of the deseret no better specimen of the photographers art was ever shown in utah the character of mr nicholson the expression of his expressive features were as clearly visible as if the face had been present itself there were pictures and samples from the prisoners at the penitentiary most of which were very creditable indeed the rustic wood work of charles ward of pleasant grove were admirable specimens of handicraft and so one might go mentioning useful and ornamental articles worthy of commendation among the features which of themselves attracted the most people to the fair building were the public marriage and the baby show to all peoples of all tongues create more curiosity and pleasure than a beautiful healthy child and the wedding of loving and blushing pair ot young folks nothing no wonder then that those two events drew thousands of spectators eager to see the prettiest babe in eluding its mother and curious to behold abo public union of the hands whose heart had long ago beat in responsive spon sive harmony to mystic power of love S after the marriage and baby show were over then speculation were rife as to who should be selected as the handsomest girl to visit the ground the committee having this matter in hand very properly concluded to name one of provos belles miss orphia roberts ayoung lady whose approaching womanhood makes her a perfect picture of modesty simplicity and beauty some criticisms and suggestions might be offered but space forbids in conclusion it may be remarked that this city and county sustained their reputation by the beauty and perfection of their exhibits which demonstrates that we lead in manufactured articles in stock in the products of the field and garden and last but not least in the handsomest ladies in the land this is gratifying may we at all future fairs always be found in the front ranks in doing honor to ourselves and this nature blessed territory |
