Show UTAH EXTENSION five hundred allies nearer to log angeles the preliminary survey of the utah central extension to southern california has now been completed hon joseph A west who returned monday evening yesterday gave a brief outline of the amount of work that has been done on this extension and the new routes that have boon laid out about the middle of last february mr west resigned his position as chief clerk of the house of the late legislative assembly to take charge of the western portion of the survey on this new railway early in march he and his party arrived at barstow Ba on the atlantic to pacific railway Eail way some 80 miles north of san bernardio Bernard mo in southern california and began surveying at a point on this railway fourteen and a half miles west of barstow the line was run in a northeasterly direction via pilot knob leaches point death valley Amer gosa and ash meadows to freeburg summit north of the valley a distance of milea arrived at freeburg mr bests party was met by the other division surveying from milford in southern utah anich had begun its labors in early february they had covered a distance of miles this would make tho entire route from milford to barstow miles the survey to barstow miles or from ogden of this line had occupied about ahrea months having completed this line mr west returned on another route he began at kano springs a very historic point connected with the early annals of pioneer history situated about fifty miles from the california state line from this point a line was run directly to barstow via valley kingston pass death valley blacks canyon and bitter springs shortening the entire route from to barstow 40 miles making it miles from ogden to barstow nearly three months were occupied in surveying this line tha remainder of the time was utilized in running a line from barstow to mojave another point on the atlantic pacific lessening tho distance about four from mo jave another line was run in a northeasterly direction connecting with the first line a death valloy thus completing a direct bouto to cither barstow or mojave to barstow the distance would be miles from barstow to los angeles via san bernardino would be about miles making the entire route from ogden to los angeles miles while the same route via majava leaving san bernardino to the southeast would bo five miles nearer or miles tha distance from ogden to los angeles over the central pacific is 1364 miles or nearly miles further than this southern extension through utah southern nevada and into california the maps and profiles are now being compiled and as eoon as ready will bo presented to the directors of the union pacific for their approval of the entire miles miles from ogden to milford are already completed leaving a distance of some miles to be constructed tx T x surveying these various routes mr has covered between and miles with his instruments during the past nine months a creditable seasons work this is outside of the numerous explorations in different directions which ho has made the greater portion of the country is a desert tract and provisions and water have to be carried great distances the past heated season has caused mr west and his party to labor under groat difficulties to bring tho work 10 a satisfactory conclusion los angelas is now n city of some people and has very excellent prospects before her and will doubtless soon rival sau francisco As southern california ic becoming noted for its climate and fertile soil the emigration during the next few years promises to ba very large and the traffic over this route will doubtless be very extensive saving the time and expenditure of miles of unnecessary travel mr west enjoyed excellent health while in the field and returns pleased with tho success of his labors and the privilege of once more being af chome stand ird nov |
