Show MORAL EDUCATION THE FINE DISCOURSE BY ELDER JOHN MORGAN eltar george God dards conclude is remarks the usual sabbath services of the church of jeans christ of latter day saints were held in the meeting hous e on sunday afternoon at 2 the choir sang on fattier whose almighty power prayer by elder jos B keeler the choir sang behold the great redeemer die A broken law to sail sly the sacrament was administered by the priesthood of the fourth ward ELDEE JOHN MORGAN was gratified for the opportunity of meeting with the saints m provo we came here as visitors today to day in sabbath school interests in the education of the sons and daughters of israel and more particularly in the moral and spiritual training we also feel like stimulating the parents in this work there are bome sixty thousand children in the sabbath schools in zion the mother provides for her child a physical education giving it air and proper food seeing that its mental education is attended cowhen it becomes of proper ago then along with this at the proper time it receives a spiritual education john L sullivan is an example of themy education and in angersoll lighty but we find him lacking spiritually at ar within himself on these points if we keep these three points before us in the education of our children we will give them the proper training if we leave one child unattended to do we not dwarf it if you develop the physical and mental neglecting the spiritual do you not dwarf tho spiritual we have conr flesh and bones that need our care and attention and coalso have a spirit that needs our care and attention we leam from the bible the of mormon and docarmo and covenants and from that which is written in every heart that this spirit existed before it entered into our bodies and was intelligent there the spirit and body make tho living soul take th child in it has eyed to see but can it control them jt has hands to feel and grasp but its mother lias to twi clr it to grasp it has feet to walk but the mother has to guide it step by step till it can walk so with every feature we learn good and evil as we grow up these habits i grow upon us until they become a part of us as youvha have used tobacco will readily testify to then when wd lay down the body nil these evil habits do not leave it the spirit takes them with it tempt the body with liquor after the spirit has left it will it take it place before it tho costliest cost liest gem will it steal why no it is a mistaken notion that death is a reformer as I 1 understand the law we take behind tho veil the habits we adopt in this life and that is why the gospel came it is the spirit that becomes contaminate dand we carry habits with us behind the veil and there we will have to repent of them I 1 must obey the law here or hereafter or I 1 cannot obtain eternal life azember odthe salvation army said after he had become initiated into that church thank god I 1 am saved I 1 asked him if he knew what that term meant fie said no it had become a familiar term to him and he had not given it much thought we read that there is only one being saved and that was christ he laid down life took up the immortal body and was exalted wo read that he that believeth beli eveth and is shall be saved and he not shall be damned now what is the meaning of this word damned suppose you go down the river here and put a dam m it a stop to tho current there so aitu the man if damned it stops him in eliat course there have been lie missionaries or teachers but something came along that worried them they sat down and gave up thereby building a dam across their pathway to heaven we often hear a person finding fault with the bishop or some one but what has that to do with his own individual salvation it is simply laying it onto someone else building a dam across his own eternal path I 1 have had the privilege of talking with david whitmer on the subject fit receiving and handling the plates but when he ceased to work ho died spiritually p lt a dam in his path went no further and ceased to grow but he is intelligent on that which he had learned up to that time and if ho begins to grow again it must be irom that point letus educate ourselves m these affairs is able to care for herself we need not bo disturbed in regard to the outcome but wo need be as to ourselves and wo can levei do it by partially educating ourselves now 1 I have with the result from the B Y academy we know as soon as wo see a missionary from the B Y academy that ho received his training especially when yon come with hun I 1 pung man iwho said his parents were not in the church me said the reason he was in the church and on that mission was that ho had been a student inthe in the B Y academy why i was aust because there they educate the moral as well As ye hereso will in the knowledge ot god w orld hereafter T T ELDER who have listened tp the er Morgan have had meat in alno season afif apri in the different and including thattie that twe les w a hill that cannot be lid T expect to see the day come when there will be a race among whom anyone who vio i late the word of wisdom will not es for as has been said any bad habit must be repented of in this world or the world to come there is to every member of the priesthood a principle of salvation or condemnation every father mother and teacher should set a good example before the children As a teacher can not impart that which he does not amow neither can he teach those things he does not practice himself so with the father or mother that drinks tea or coffee while we are undergoing trials we need the spirit of god to be with us how proud a father is of his son who grows up an honorable man in the church A good name is better than riches and the parent that leaves them this is better than riches what a responsibility rests let us sustain every prin ciple of truth sustain every industry and the labor of our own hands we should not look after pride humble and prayerful we are here to benefit each other truth is eternal and will stand forever I 1 feel to bless and prophecy good to israel ann en the choir sang an anthem Di mUtus benediction
