Show DEATH OF DANIEL H KEELER A well spent life peacefully closed in death on saturday morning last brother daniel H keeler an old resident of the fourth Ward passed away to the home beyond he has been aa invalid for over a year and although his death was expected it has brought sorrow to the hearts of his aged wife and children born in ton new jersey on the of july 1811 when apostle parley P pratt was delivering his series of discourses on the Millem in the city of new york about 1840 brother keeler who was a great reader and who at that time was bordering on infidelity on account of the inconsistencies of the doctrines taught by christendom happened to enter the hall and listened to a powerful discourse being preached he I 1 was convinced of the truth of mormonism and was baptized almost immediately after his baptism he went to nauvoo where he became associated with the church and shared the persecutions of the saints being an excellent mason having worked on such fine edifices as the of the united states and girard college in philadelphia he labored on the nauvoo temple he came to utah in the year 1850 and endured the hardships and privations of a pioneer life he was a member of the high priests quorum at the time of his demise and leaves his aged partner 70 years of age 3 sons 1 daughter and 15 grandchildren grand children yesterday morning at 11 the funeral services were held in the fourth ward meetinghouse meeting house the rites being conducted by bishop john E booth the choir sang the hymn commencing creation speaks with awful voice president jacob gates offered prayer hi which he invoked the peaceful influences of god to rest upon the bereaved the hymn mourn not the dead was then sweetly sang by the choir ELDER G MAESER said scenes like the one presented before make us realize our positions before the lord and call forth reflections in regard to the hereafter when we contemplate a life like the one that has been led by brother keeler it makes us feel like rejoicing jo because he kept the faith lived up to his covenants enjoyed the full fellowship of the saints and has gone behind the veil to receive the reward of the faithful there is cause for rejoicing instead of sorrow cause for thanks div ing instead of leman tation our work is not completed when this parting inlo o i i ceone cEo nj no n leave this existence in order to complete the work of salvation that is so beautifully laid out in the plan of redemption when the books are opened and men are judged according to the deeds done in the body brother keeler will receive ids reward the robes he wears as he lays in his last bleed bleep are far superior and 0 more value than the purple robes of kings and potentates he is heir to the priesthood of the son of god and therefore has keys and powers to operate behind alie veil these great blessings will last will stay with us throughout eternity and brother keeler would not have exchanged them for all the riches the world possesses these things should cause us to rejoice and live as our brother has done that when wo are called to go hence we may go with the blessed realization that we have fought the good fight and have kept the faith and henceforth there is a crown of glory awaiting us in the realms of a blessed eternity PRESIDENT H H clerf said that while reflecting upon the circumstances that brought the people present the question came to ida mind where has brother keeler gone when he was in the vigor of life he was able to accomplish com a great deal of labor but grey hairs came upon liis head after a great deal of toil and bowed him down so that he was unable to accomplish as well as he desired the duties of life but now he has again taken upon him the vigor of life and has started another series of labors with as much ambition as he did his temporal affairs he is watching over bia tabernacle with anxiety that it may be safely laid away till alie dawn 0 1 the moning of the first resurrection when he will again possess it quickened by the holy spirit of god no man iu and u himself can rob us of these glorious blessings we may scandalize each other rob each kotlier of our possessions poa sessions but so far as the riches of eternity are concerned we can not be deprived of the glories that await us belond by mortals other records may be obliterated but the record taftt is made of our I 1 a tiona by the angels in haji en will nver be effaced and will meet us beyond we can only see by the natural eye but we are freed from this prison this we will be able to comprehend all ahns this is the way with our departed brother he can now behold the glories of goda creation from which to a certain extent we are de barred from beholding PRESIDENT D JOHN stated that he looked upon brother keeler as one of the noblest works of god he was a man full of honesty and integrity a man who labored hard to make an lion eat living he meek aa a child and humble in alif strictest bense of the term his children alii ald be proud of their father as undoubtedly they were for lie has lived a good moral life he was ordained a high priest many ears ago and he endeavored faithfully to magnify hia calling some men have no lima to serve god and instruct their children but spend all their time in contriving beann to make money but when they die they must leave all naked they came and naked they will return to the dust with conr departed brother it was bifi erent he lived so that be leaves beliinda him a record for integrity for the kingdom of god and has sone to receive his reward how sweet true religion is how blessed is the hope of I 1 it is an anchor to our souls and a licht to our hearts in linaea of temptations in mv early youth the thought of death cast a over my mind but it was removed ax the light of the gospel by the ministry of the holy spirit why should we fear our kind father will be our judge and he will judge us righteously we should fear our own sine and transgressions in departing from him the psalmist fluid the lord is my shepherd I 1 shall not baut yea I 1 walk through the valley of the shadow of death I 1 will fear no evil for thou art with nry thy rod and thy comfort me ought we ts na tsar fr ass i W it not to be thankful that we have been brought to behold the light of the plan ored emption and ought we not to employ more of our time in laying up treasures in heaven that we there when we may have an inheritance leave thin mortal life our friends b hind the veil are interested in our welfare and in the welfare and prepress pre press of the gospel among mankind we debould understand tho relationship that exists between them and us as well as the relationship lation ship that exists between us arid our heavenly father then dread and fear would cease to exist when mens lives were governed by the gospel spirits through lack of correct principles mankind have considered death as an enemy to our race but death is as important as our birth in the plan of human redemption demp tion and exaltation it has bean universal throughout all the age the rich and the poor the young and the old the good and aba bad the saint and the paean are all subject to his dominion of our whole race it is true dust thou art and unto dust shall thou return die they must but rise they shall and although the paints will see corruption yet they shall rise to everlasting life christs resurrection is the cause the assurance and the emblem of the rising of all his people blessed is he that has served the lord faithfully for he shall fear no evil but shall look forward to an eternity of bliss it is recorded thus in divine writ for christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands which are the figures of the true but into heaven itself now to appearing pearin ap the presence of god for us from the world and from the church as a personage he is gone we do not biear his voice or behold his face henceforth saith we know him no more after the flesh he dwells not in earthly altars I 1 have seen images in cathedrals made of brass silver and gold intended to represent reo resent him with his name inscribed thereon but he is not anere he is not in the holy Sa crement of the lords supper the bread and wire are merely emblems representing his body which was broken for us the anel told mary at the sepulchre he is reHe is first fruits of them that slept for since by man came death by man cams also the resurrection of the dead for as in adam all die even BO in christ shall all be made alive thus we find that the resurrection willbe as extended as death but every man in his own order christ the first fruits afterward they that are christs at tho coming st paul said the last enemy that shall be destroyed is death the prophet isaiah he will swallow up death in victory md the lord god win wipe away tears from off all faces and the rebuke of his people shall be taken away from off the earth for the lord hath spoken it again it is said I 1 will ransom them from the power of the grave I 1 will redeem them from death 0 death I 1 will be thy plagues 0 grave I 1 will be thy destruction repentance shall be hid from mine eyes these words were fulfilled in the resurrection of jesus christ for he has abolished death and hath brought life and immor he became triumphant over death and alie grave and took possession of the keys of the vaults of the dead As the disciples were gazing earnestly into the heavens as he ascended on high behold two men stood by them in white apparel and said to them ye men of galilee why stand ye gazing into the heavens this same jesus who is even now taken from you into heaven will come in the same way as yo have seen him go we have a divine as that we shall meet again
