Show THE SKULKING, LYING' NEWS, Ou Tucs'day, February IS, 190S, tho Descret News printed an editorial article ar-ticle which had been inspired by an inquiry in-quiry presented to it by a correspondent. corre-spondent. It is probable that at no time in its cutire career has the church organ succeeded in exposing its own infamous in-famous character, and the perfidious policy of concealment it is pursuing, to a greater degree of aharaelessnoss than upon this particular occasion. In this city is living a gentleman who explains himself to bo a reader of both The Tribune and the Dcseret News. Ho wrote a letter to the church organ, presenting a number of inquiries. The News treated this communication in its usual fashion, ignoring the salient points and trailing off into immaterialities immaterial-ities and the oustomaiy reference to the ancients. Finding that he could get neither satisfaction nor justice from the Mormon lord's publisher, the citizen 'transmitted a copy of his letter to The Tribune. We here reproduce it as it was received by the News: I am a recent arrival In Salt Lake City, and have becomo very much Interested In Tho Tribune's fight against Mormon-Ism, Mormon-Ism, I had always been under the Impression Im-pression that the MormonB were a very superior people, notwithstanding their disregard dis-regard 01 the law concerning" polygamous marriages. But The Trlbunc'B continual assaults, mectlnp with no dofonse from the News, which I am given to understand Is the official organ of the Mormon church, Is enough to alter the opinion of a ftranfrer. Why is It that the News does not defend de-fend Itself, and olther prove the lnnooence of the high officials of the church of tho charges against them, or help tho District Dis-trict Attorney to convict them of their crimes? If such mon as Tanner Is accused of being be-ing avc not prosecuted, what right has Utah to Statehood? And what right has th! Mormon church to pretend to bo a civilized institution? Is tho News afraid to answer The Tribune's Trib-une's charges, for fear of waking tho tlthc-payors up? Is ft, possible that, keeping the valnts shrouded with n blanket of ignorance a.nd mystery Is the only way to kcop the tithes forthcoming, so that the church IcatlcrH can continue In the delights of polygamous luxury? Polygamy Is bigamy, and I think it is time for the law-abiding citizens to get busy and elect n District Attorney who will send all such men as Tanner Is accused ac-cused of bolng to Jail whore they belong. be-long. There you have tho letter entire. Now lot us show you how tho News treated it. Shorn of its bewildered ramblings into comment upon Smoot, Hopkins and the alleged freedom of tho saints, hero is the substance of the reference which the News made to the communication: A gentleman who says he Is a stranger who has become very much Interested In The Trlbuno's fight against Mormonlem, ask? the Dcserot News: "Why is it that the, News does not defend itself?" That Is a somewhat odd question Sometimes Some-times the most effective defense is silence, and the faith that always comes out triumphant, tri-umphant, ultimately. In this same editorial article the News ' attempted defense of certain other charges which bud been made by The Tribune, aud which by emplo--ment of its usual methods of unsupported unsup-ported denial, repudiation, evasion, concealment, con-cealment, hypocrisj and suppression of truth the church organ fancied it could explain, away. Why does it, tbon, skulk away in "silence" iu the presy ence of tho othor and graver charges' Q Lot an3' man wake- a charge against itho church, tfic Descret Nows or any I member of the church whoso falseness would be evident upon its vorj' face, and the organ of sccrot Mormon lechery would fly to dofeusive arms.-at onco. So delighted would it bo at having for once found something which it was capable of handling that it would glee-fully glee-fully return to it forever and a day. But present to it such questions as were asked b3r tho News correspondent, and make such truthful charges agajit3t its own favorites as The Tribune has made against the notoriously filthy Tanner, j and the Descret News flees in terror, or I dismisses them with a curt announcement announce-ment that it is nobody's business. Say that a hnmblo block toacher is advocating advo-cating the candidac3' of a dog-catcher, and the Nows will bravely plunge itself into deep and prolonged hysterical defense, de-fense, whininglj' protesting that the saints, tho church and the Mormon religion re-ligion are being persecuting' attacked. at-tacked. But. come forward with a charge in serious truth that one of its polygamous pets has ripped open anew the putrid spot that has been fostering upon our body politic; that ho has trampled tho pledge of the people un-dor un-dor foot; that ho has exuded his lecherous lech-erous spume in tho ver3' faco of each and overy citizen in tho community; that ho bas committed a crime which attacks the safety of virtue and degrades de-grades the wifehood of the commonwealth; common-wealth; that ho has engaged in the do-liberato do-liberato occupation of filling the land with unfortunate and helpless bastards, who will seok to make conjugal allianco with 3'our own loved ones; and what does the Dcseret News, official organ of tho traitorous scoundrols, do? It sucakingl3' slinks into tho inner recesses re-cesses of the polygamous den with the pretendedly dignified announcement that "Sometimes the most effective defense de-fense is silence, and tho faith that al-waj's al-waj's comes out triumphant, ultimately." ultimate-ly." And the3 call this poltroon the champion cham-pion of "truth and libort-!" Tn the presence of the men of tho Mormon church it is a cowardly dastard of unapproachable un-approachable meanness. Before tho women of Utah it is a white-livered funk, whose abject chattoring makes it a thing to bo despised. It pla3rs tho evil procurer in the service of ecclesiastical ecclesi-astical libertines, who seek to prosti-tuto prosti-tuto tho daughters of men. It is recreant to duly toward tho babos unborn un-born a dunghill craven whose pretended pretend-ed courage is not sufficient to ooze out a turn-tail "Boo!" to a filing goose. The treatment which he Descret News nccorded to the letter which was sent to it is precise that which meets the honest saint who protests against the iniquity of his leaders. Joseph F. Smith, tho responsible protector of all the crimes within the Mortnon church, sa-s that, if a man has a gricvanco -against him, he can make complaint to Smith's bishop. What would be the result? re-sult? JIo would bo suppressed, as was tho protesting letter to the News. He would be. ostracized, persecuted and driven out of the. cbmmunit Can3'ou now see -whj po'gamj- is again rampant in tho Mormon church J Wake up, Gentiles and Mormons aliko, and stamp tho slinij evil out forever. |
