Show HIGH RATES ON STOCK Radical Advance in Freight for Shippers CHANGE EFFECTIVE SEPT 15 Applies to All Kinds of LiveStock Live-Stock Considered a Serious Blow 10 < Sheep men and Cattlemen in This RegIon Railroad rales on stock have taken a decided leap upward The advance became be-came known yesterday and Is the most Important since last winter when the rates on wool were disturbed favor of the railroads Shippers will be advised ad-vised of the Increase today and It Is expected that the announcement will create the usual commotion although nn Increase has been looked for The new tariff becomes effective on September Septem-ber loth and will Influence the rate on all Jive stock shipments between common com-mon points In Utah and the Missouri river NO REASON GIVEN No particular reason Is given for the advance other than that the rates have boon lower In proportion than other shipments handled by the railroads rail-roads and that the conditions which have created an Increase In other railroad rail-road departments have operated to encourage en-courage the increase in the matter of live stock Shippers on the other hand feel that the only influence which has Invited the advance Is that represented repre-sented In the Increased business The shipments have been unusually heavy and the Indications are that they will be heavier as the season advances It Is already becoming difficult to get the cars 1 to lake cate of the stock and the shippers believe the railroads are taking tak-ing advantage of the situation by increasing In-creasing the rates WILL HAVE TO BOW An era of prosperity is upon us paid a shipper yesterday The railroads rail-roads see It and we will have to bow to the Inevitable just as the woolbuy ers did last winter We shall make a kick of course and If there is any way to cscaoe this extra tariff we shall do It hut it Is early yet to outline a plan of action The Increase Is a pretty stiff one and there will be a howl all along the line but what to do regarding the matter remains to be seen We may not be able to help ourselves but we shall not submit to the increase without with-out a struggle Much will depend upon the railroads that arc In the deal GET IT IN THE NECK It seems to me thai stockraisers are getting It In the neck and if this keeps up the railroads will get the worst of It In the long run It Is for their Interest to encourage stockrais InS In this part of the country aa It is one of the biggest Items they have to count on Unfavorable railroad action ac-tion Is liable to have Its effect on stock raisers In this part of the West The sheepmen seem Jo be getting the worst of It at every turn LOSSES LAST WINTER I In the first place they suffered heavy losses last winter from the weather wea-ther Later it looked as If they would have a chance to recover through the wool market which promised to open up strong Before the season arrived came the announcement that there would be an increase In the rates which settled the extras that were looked for In the wool crop The natural nat-ural Increase In stock this spring promised prom-ised to offset the other discouragements discourage-ments and the present heavy shipments ship-ments to the Eastern markets have been the result Now the sheepraisers are again to he the victims of tariff rates Naturally they feel sore as the Increase Is an Important one TAKES IN ALL KINDS The tariff which goes Into effect during dur-ing the next fifteen days will Influence all kinds of live stock shipments The present rate on sheep and goats In doubledeck cars from common points In Utah to the Missouri river la 110 Under the new tariff schedule the rate will be SLUG This Is the rate from Ogden Park City IIeber Spanish Fork Soldier Summit and Intermediate points to Council Bluffs Omaha and I Kansas City The present rate on horses and mules is 129 This rate will be Increased to 130 The present rate on cattle Is S119 The new rale will be SliG the same rates also applying on hogs In slnsrledeck cars WILL TRY FOR RELIEF An effort may be made to brine the matter before the Transmlasourl Freight bureau during its session In this city In the hope that favorable action will bo taken for the shippers of stock Last year the matter of the tariff on manufactured iron promised to become a thorn in the side of Utah buyers and the time was extended by the freight bureau until the first of the year The clockraisers hope for something of this kind In their case Patton Highly Pleased W A Patlon assistant to President A J Cassat of the Pennsylvania lines changed his plans 1 and stayed over Sunday Sun-day In Salt Lake lie heard the organ saw the Temple block on both sides and was driven around the city and shown the handsome residence section and the biiHlncss center With the latter lat-ter he expressed great satisfaction and predicted a great future for Salt Lake |
