Show DR ZLIFFS SERMON Believes the World is Growing Better Bet-ter Instead of Worse i Dr Illff preached last night at the I First M E church taking for his text I The Signs of the Times Tc said no I doubt It haa always been a matter of speculation whether the world Is getting f get-ting better or worse TMO general opinions opin-ions prevail one class contending that matters aro getting better and better I and the other clans that matters are continuing to get worse and worse Some people are always hopeful oLhers always despondent It Is a very common I com-mon saying that every man has his price That Is not true Benedict Arnold Ar-nold may hoe had his price but no amount of money oculd have bought I George Washington It Is absurd to I conclude that any class of men are bad because some Mho compose that class I are untrustworthy Take our national Congress as an Illustration These men are elected by tho noblest constituency the world has ever seen They may be here and there an untrustworthy man sent to Congress If a man were a thief drunkard or bad man generally before his election he would probably carry out the same life in Washington But these men are very few compared with the great body that compose both J houses of Congress Let us look at the question In sober thoughtfulness Are we plunging Into the abysses of barbarism It Is needless need-less to ask consent that the material and Intelligent argument points conclusively con-clusively to a golden age In the future Ever since the gifted stranger swung I worlds Into space and peopled this globe the pathway has been brightening brighten-ing from then to nov Through all the ages In the Christian Era the startling question has been asked Why is Christianity a failure Nineteen hundred hun-dred years ago a beautiful stranger the son of God was born The great cities that then ruled the world were Rome Athens and Jerusalem but none of these or all of them combined gave promise or security for the highest or holiest wants of mankind It remained for the Babe of Bethlehem to give Rome Athens Jerusalem and the world the highest Ideals of the purest civilization civil-ization I |
