Show DEPUTIES FIRE AT FLEEING MENThe MEN-The Fugitives Were Suspected of Stealing Wool and Were Trying to Escape but the Officers Succeeded in Halting One The reports of three shots fired In rapid succession and the sight of two men fleeing from ofilcers in pursuit caused considerable excitement In tho vicinity of State and Eighth South streets yesterday afternoon The olll cers wore Deputy Sheriffs Goldman and Dowse and the fleeing men were John C Wilkinson of Ao East Third South strcet and Franlc Parker of Aberdeen place The shooting which was done by Goldman with no intention of inJurIng in-juring the men had the desired effect Qf bringing Wilkinson to a standstill but Parker continued and made good his escape The cause of the pursuit njid tho circumstances cir-cumstances leading to It are these On Tuesday night 300 pounds of wool was stolen from C L IMlller and W D Parks at Murray and on the same night a quantity of scrap Iron was stolen at Sandy The thefts were reported re-ported to the Sheriffs ofllce and yes terday Deputy Dowse located tho wool at the store of the Utah Junk company I at 6365 East Eighth South street where it had been sold for S cents a pound A description of the parties who sold the wool was also obtained and together the deputies started out Jon J-on a roundup Luck seemed to be with them for in a short while they espied a man and team on State street that answered the description of the rig and ono of the man for whom they were looking The man was placed under arrest and despite his vigorous protests and his frantic assertions as to his in nocenco he was detained until it was learned from the Junk store proprietors that the men who had sold the wool were again at the store this time with a load of Iron The deputies turned the suspect loose and proceeded at a rapid gait after the two men As the officers approached the Junk stern Wilkinson and Parker seeing them left thoir team and ran following which occurred the shooting and Wilkinsons arrest Wilkinson was placed in Jail and complaint will be made against him today but Parker instill in-still at large The load of scrap Iron which is supposed to be that stolen at Sandy is in charge of tho Sheriff |
