Show I SPRAY lid SUCCESSFL I I Oregon Short Line Salt Train I in Operation j I l KILLS WEEDS IN TRICE I i 1 I fl f I Train Built Hero and Consistsof Six I I l Tank Cars With Total Water Capacity S Capa-city of 21000 Gallons All Cars I I I I Connected With Sprinkler at Rear 1 To Save Pumping Water Solid Salt is Brought in from Lake Shore and Tanks Loaded Water Taken L I from Any Point Railroad Notes I J The salt water sprinkling train of the Oregon Short Line has been tested and is a decided success Weeds wither and die after the shower and the train I will now be operated dally Yesterday i it sprinkled for a distance vOl n few miles this side of Woods Cross and I today it will start at Third North and work toward Ogden until the whole line Is sprinkled with brine I As railroads annually spend thousands I thou-sands of dollars to section mci for pulling weeds the Short Lines experiment experi-ment has been watched by roadway officials I of-ficials all over the country At first I there were some who were Inclined to laugh at the idea of making Great Salt lake water Into a weed eradicator but the company kept on at Its work and the train was built I consists of six ordinary 2Sfool I fiat cars on each of which has been l built a wooden tank with outside supports sup-ports The capacity of each tank Is 3500 gallons so the capacity of the train Is 21000 gallons The tanks are all connected by three inch pipes and hose running above lH couplers and on the end car is d sprinkling I sprin-kling l apparatus The hose between each car can be removed however and the pipes plugged The water can be let out of each car on a splash board and sprinkle the track In a more thorough way than by the rearend sprinkler I was at first Intended to lond the cars direct from the lake with saltwater salt-water but a better plan was thought t of Solid salt Is brought in I on the Gtl field train and thrown Into th > tanks Then the water Is added and the mixture mix-ture used The first method would have required constant trips back to a pump lug station on the lake and by the accepted ac-cepted plan Ihe sold salt can be hauled to any point and the water taken from any tank on the line saving much time There Is any amount of unrefined salt on the hike shore that Is easily procured pro-cured and the results are the same The effect of tho spray Is v remarkable Wherever the water reaches It leaves n desert and In striking contrast Is the reach line of luxuriant growth beyond Its The cars present a snowy appearance the bottoms being hung with long stalactites sta-lactites and the trucks having the ap I pearance of a late esslon In some artificial ar-tificial ice plan I v The experiments have been made under un-der the direction < of J H Young sup su-p ii ii teuidei t and the rain i built I un drr the supervision o W J Tollerton master mechanic both of tho Utah division |
