Show SCHEME DID NOT WORK EECKHAM NOT YET NAMED BY KENTUCKY DEMOCRATS > Red Firo Was Already to be Lighted Lust Night But Qommitteo on Credentials Delayed Matters Lexington Kk July 10A large and disappointed audience was held all night here at the pavilion The Democratic Demo-cratic State convention had taken a re ces sat 430 till S30 p m expecting thc committees to report In the evening the convention to conclude under the brilliant bril-liant illumination with the nomination of Gov Bcckham But the committee on credentials and resolutions were unI able to agree on their reports and the large audience was kept waiting In vain all night for the crowning event The time was filled In wjth speeches that were eloquent and some of them exceptionally witty While the entertainmentwas good In its way It was not what was expected and there were complaints of a scheme to hold the convention another day I was almost midnight when tho committee com-mittee on credentials finally came In with majority and minority reports The largo audience listened patently to the arguments of war politics In Cov Intrtoh Newnort and other nlacos and t In the weary hours after midnight were still patiently listening to the story of local contests A The Beckham lines were as solid as ever today Claims were made by the opposition that they have made Inroads on the Instructed vote of Gov Beck ham The Bcckham men claimed that they had 172 Instructed votes and asI many of the instructed delegates as the field combined or more than enough to I nominate I requires 547 to nominate and the vote against Beckham Is scattered I scat-tered between Black McCreury Lewis I 1 i Tarvln Smith Pryor and Garnet J without any effective organization to concentrate on any one man against lalnst I the Governor The opposition remained I scattered during the district meetings none of those In the first carrying more than one district while thy Beckham I faction claimed a majority in each o the committees and thereby the control of the convention conventon At a conference in Senator Black I burns room which lasted until nearly G a in and at which Gov Bcckham was represented it was agreed to recommend rec-ommend an early extra session of the Legislature for the purpose of amending amend-ing the Goobcl election law The result I I re-sult of this conference has been generally gener-ally accepted by the Beckham men and it has relieved them from embarrassment embar-rassment over the only plank In the platform that was In dispute This plan leaves the whole matter to the Legislature without any specific declaration declar-ation of the convention as to how the modification of the election law shall be made Meanwhile the opposition say that the Beckham men have made this concession under protect and will not work sincerely In 1 the Legislature for a satisfactory modification of the law oS lawThe The convention was called to order at 230 p in and the first thing in order I or-der was the selection of a temporary chairman The names of Judge J E Robbins and of R Frank Peake were presented During the balloting numerous nu-merous disputes arose and delayed progress pro-gress Before the ballot was completed It was evident that Judge Robbins was the winner After all the 110 counties had been called tho name of Pcakc was withdrawn and Robbins was selected as chairman by acclamation This result re-sult was greeted with a great demonstration demon-stration by the Bcckham men Judge Robbing was thcrj escortedlo the platform and spoke at some length Committees were then appointed nd at 430 oclock a recess was takdh until S30 oclock The report of the committee on organization or-ganization recommended that the temporary tem-porary organization be made permanent perma-nent The convention refused to adjourn ad-journ and a cal of counties for the nomination was made The confusion was such that the secretary could not proceed xv th the call and finally It was announced that the committee on resolutions was ready to report and Senator Blackburn began reading the same at 2 oclock a m I was submitted sub-mitted as unanimous and was adopted The platform calls for fair elections and recommends that the act of 1SOS known a the Goebel election law be amended and that until E amended as to be satisfactory to all Republicans cans shall have representatives on both State and county elections The Kansas City platform Is reaffirmed and the administration of Gov Beck ham is indorsed The districts were then called for nominations for Governor Gov-ernor and Congressman Wheeler presented pre-sented the name of Gov Beckham in L stirring speech The presentation of the names of the other candidates followed fol-lowed although there was no doubt whatever of the nomination of Gov I Beckham who was on the platform ready to make his speech of acceptance I |
