bolted the meeting last night after the routine business was transacted and as his presence was I necessary for a quorum tho meeting I went out of business right there The I trouble prow out of an effort to name i a prb clpal for the high school Mr Dambcrger offered the name or Prof George A Eaton of Ogden Mr Wilson 1 docs not seem to vant Mr Eaton very I much and as It seemed certain that I four of the six members present were ready to vote In favor of the Ogden man Mr Wilson fanned out and prevented pre-vented a 1 choice until another meeting at Iqast I There were present at the meeting President Wilson Mr Glauque Mr Moyle Mr Newman Mr Young and Mr Bambergcr After the transacting of the regular routine and the acceptance I accept-ance of the annual reports Mr Bam bcrger Introduced resolution naming Prof Eaton as principal of the high j school at a salary of 200 per month Mr Young seconded the resolution It was then staled that Superintendent I I Cooper had a report to make on the high school principal matter Mr Cooper said he had prepared a report but did not desire to offer it at that time unless It were called for Mr Bambergcr said he did not recall that Superintendent Cooper had ever been authorized Investigate and report upon the matter and he wanted the minutes of the meeting at which this authority had been conferred read WILSON1 BREAKS QUORUM Before anything further was done President Wilson asked Mr Bamber ger to take the chair and the unsuspecting unsus-pecting Mr Bamberger acceded to the request Mr Wilson then took up a position near the door and made a few short remarks calling tho attention the members to the circumstances under un-der which Mr Cooper had been requested re-quested to Investigate and report upon candidates for the position Mr Wilson Wil-son stated that certain members of the board had promised to look further into certain matters pertaining to Prof Eaton at Ogden but had not done this Mr Wilson then went on to state that it was understood the matter of the selection se-lection of n principal was not to come up at that meeting and asked to be excused from any further participation in the proceedIngs that evening Vlth an elaborate and painstaking bow he passed out of the door THEY WERE POWERLESS Mr Bamberger was the first to break the silence He said Well we cant do anything more We havent got a quorum Mr Clerk will you please make a record that the President left the meeting without a quorum 1 Some one asked l if a motion to adjourn ad-journ were not in order but Mr Bam berger said he didnt see how anything at all could be done I think we ought to pass a resolution resolu-tion censuring the President said Mr Newman We cant do It said Mr Bamber ger we cant do anything Tins is part of a deliberate plot to defeat the wishes of the majority of this board said Mr Glauque Well said Mr Bamberger Mr Nel len said he couldnt come ton ght because he would be busy at the store A telephone to the store tonight failed to get any reply That simply meant that there was nobody there so he couldnt have been at the store There was some further conversation of a desultory nature and the remaining remain-ing members of the board then departed de-parted STATUS OF THE CONTEST The fight on the princlpalship will no doubt be between Prof Eaton and C S Osborne of Detroit who It Is understood has the Indorsement of Superintendent Cooper and will be supported by Mr Wilson and several other members of the board Mr Os bore it is believed will secure the votes of Messrs Wilson Henderson Walker Crltchlow Nelden and perhaps per-haps Moyle which would make a majority ma-jority of the board Prof Eaton Is believed to have the support of the remaining re-maining members Messrs Bamberger Young Giauque and Newman all of whom were present last night while Mftssrs Henderson Walker and Crltch low are out of the city and Mr Nelden was said to be ill at a late hour last night Superintendent Cooper on his late trip East was Informally requested re-quested to look into the merits of Wo candidates for the princlpalship H M Hart of Pueblo Colo and Mr Os borne On his return Superintendent Cooper handed his report to the Committee Com-mittee on Teachers and School Work A meeting of the board was called about the middle of last month to con skier the matter but no quorum appeared ap-peared Messrs Bamberger Newman Glauque and Young being absent by agreement it Is charged by the other side of the controversy The two sides of the case as given by the two chief actors last night arc about as follows MR WILSONS SIDE i Mr Wilson said I left the meeting because they had put up a job to run this man through and chose a time when Henderson was in Michigan Walker in California Critchlow In Eureka and Nclden sick In bed to work It I wanted this matter considered when there was approximately ut least a full board present but when i saw they were determined to force the thing on us that way I took the only course open to me and left the meeting Four votes would have elected easily enough there tonight and they all came prepared to elect their candidate CHARGES AGAINST EATON Mr Bamberger said It is all a personal fight on Eaton About a month ago Mr Wilson presented a letter let-ter maklng vcry grave charges against Eaton saying among other things that I upon one occasion Mr Eaton was Intoxicated In-toxicated In Ogden ala club banquet i there Mr Wilson refused to give the name of the writer of the letter but I said he would vouch for tire mans I truthfulness Well we had no answer prepared at the time and let the matter mat-ter drop Later however we learned that the charges made were wholly unfounded un-founded and we made Mr Wilson admit that he was mistaken by producing proofs We proved that Mr Eaton had not been at or near the club on the night when It was charged he was Intoxicated In-toxicated They also urged against Eaton that he amoked cigars as If that were a crijne OLIVER IN IT This fight upon Eaton was partly started by friends of Evangelist Oliver I KVPPVOIIP flflmliR Mr Ratons scholarly I S ability and admits that he would dignify dig-nify the position There wan all effort made while Oliver was In Ogden to get the high school pupils there excused ex-cused from school so they could go to Olivers mooting Mr Eaton refused to let them OOI1 that excuse and this made Olivers friends mad Then a young fellow who had become one of Olivers converts came to the schoolhouse school-house and tried to sell tickets In the schoolroom Mr Eaton would not let him do this and told him to come around at recess time This made the young fellow mad and he has been one I of the most industrious m working up feeling against Eaton Mr Eaton In fully qualified for the position Ills superior does not live in the West and this fight against him Is nil from personal per-sonal motives II OUTCOME UNCERTAIN Just which one of the two candidates for the princlpalship will win out when the matter finally comes to a vote is not yet settled of course It Is thought that at present Mr Osborne has five votes onehalf the botja safe with a possibility of securing one more Mr Moyie is thought to be almost neutral as yet and It was believed that If the matter had come to a vote last night he would have refused to vote Even at that tho majority foe Eaton would have been sufficient four to one The situation promises to develop Into quite a bitter right BUSINESS OF MEETING The meeting transacted very little I business aside from passing upon the annual reports Applications to teach I were received and filed from Miss Muriza A Clay W H Tawney and A J NIelson of Salt Lake and Warren D Balccr of Buchanan Mich the latter a candidate for the princlpalship of the high school About twenty citizens of Lako Breeze petitioned the board to open the school at Lake Breeze again this fall The petitioner called attention to their lock of street car facilities the distance loan lo-an school and the Impossibility of I having their small children get to school as things nt present are Referred to committee I The report of Treasurer Barnett for the month of July was submitted and I adopted The report shows disburse j i merits of 2371731 during the month and no revenues which after deducting the balanceof 510040 on hand July 1st leaves an overdraft of 1861091 Appropriations aggregating 515264 for current expenses etc were made and rthe Committee on Buildings and Grounds was authorized to make l I repairs on buildings aggregating 3S8i I which will make the overdraft that much greater I A resolution by Mr Bamberger I authorizing the Finance committee to I solicit bids for publishing the clerks annual report In accordance with law was carried unanimously Mr Bam berger then Introduced Iris Eaton resolution reso-lution which finished the meeting as stated above |
