Show FIRES ON MOUNTAIN SIDES I A BUltLTANT SPECTACLE AFFORDED AF-FORDED LAST NIGHT Blaze Ban Close to State Prison in the Afternoon and Kept at Bay by Guards and Convicts Fire raged on the dry mountain sides above the east bench yesterday It Is said that a passing engine set fire to some oak brush In Parleys canyon early in the afternoon and the high wind so scattered the sparks that blazes sprung up In a great many places The flames went over Emigration canyon and started a fire in the brush back of the Fort At night this was at its height l and afforded dazzling spectacle spec-tacle During a portion of the evening the scene was one of great beauty the whole cast bench being lighted The fire burned freely until 11 oclock and then began to die out For a time In tho afternoon the burnIng burn-Ing brush threatened to set fire to the outbuildings about tho penitentiary A number of guards and prisoners manned the prisons lime f apparatus and with an effort kept the flames at bay Finally the blaze discovering that It could not break into the States bastlle turned tall and retreated through the dry brush toward the mouth of Parleys canyon No damage was done as far AS could be learned but the fires caused o largo amount of talk especially in the afternoon after-noon when the dense smoke caused I many rumors to be afloat |
