Show WANT TO GO TO WEST POINT Examination of Applicants for the Appointments to the Mi litary I Academy Begun One Being a Colored Boy Tho examination of applicants for appointment ap-pointment to tho West Point Military academy was begun at the University yesterday morning About twenty applicants ap-plicants presented themselves but only ten of them successfully passed the I physical examination which was conducted con-ducted by Dr Niles of this city and Dr E S Tenney post surgeon at Fort Douglas Those who passed the physical physi-cal examination were examined In the following branches by 1 President Dr Klngsbury nnd Prof Stewart of the University Arithmetic orthography English grammar United States history his-tory writing reading and geography Those who are now taking the examination exam-ination are Gerald Child Ogden Rupert Ru-pert A Dunford Harry R Fulton Ab ner Howell Nelson E Margctts Wil I liam A Richards C J Thlrklll Charles Ulmer Salt Lake R L Irvine I Provo Edward Lccompe Park City Mr Margetts was a sergctnt In the Utah batteries Abner Howell Is a colored I col-ored boy of this city who recently graduated grad-uated from tho high school and has been well known as a football player here The examination will probably not b finished until tomorrow and the results 1 will not bo known for several days thereafter Under the terms of Senator Sen-ator Rawllnss advertisement the highest high-est two competitors will be recommended recommend-ed for appointment to the academy and tho next two highest will be named as I alternates The successful competitors will have to report for their entrance examination at West Point on July L3th It Is probable that some additional I can dldates will present themselves for examination ex-amination here today |
