Show CONTEST OF LYCEUMS I YOUNG LADIES DEBATE WITH I YOUNG MEN I Interesting Programme nt Joint I Meeting of Garfield nnd Alethian I Lyceum I An Inteiciting literary and musical I programmu l was presented at the First Congregational church last night by a Joint meeting of the members of tho youig mens James A Garfield lyccum and the young ladles Alethian lyceum 1 The room was attractively decorated with national colors and a goodsized audience was present The honor of presiding was divided between T M Herbert and Miss ttrsrlha Bootes presidents l presi-dents of the two organizations Prayer was offered by Dr C TIn T-In own after which Mr Herbert extended ex-tended a welcome to the young ladle stating that the object oC the young Incas society was akin to theirs In that It cultivated Intelligence and patriotism pa-triotism Miss Bootes responded that the young women would give willing aid In furthering good citizenship With minds sincere and pure she said they would be womanly women true to their principles to themselves and to thereabout there-about them After n wellexecuted vocal solo by Joseph Thomstorff Mies Nellie GOBS was Initiated Into the Alethian society and Norman Davis and Joseph Johnson were admitted Into the Gartluld society The next number was a violin solo by Miss Louise Nclden The question for debate Resolved That TJnltcd States Senators should be elected by a direct vote of the people was discussed by Miss Maydella Hobbs I and A E Eberhardt Miss Hobbs took the affirmative Her argument was I well arranged and concisely and forcibly forci-bly stated An enlightened public 1 she claimed was Inslatnnt In demanding a reform In the manner of ejecting Senators I Sena-tors I was 1 demand of the people and they were the highest and best Judges Agents did not always carryout 1 carry-out tho wishes of principals and these elections hud become so uncertain that II the people had no part In them The < present system she sid favored bossism I boss-Ism the gerrymander and corruption Four Stales were now not fully represented repre-sented In the Senate and change would 1111 these places and raise a Sen atorshlp to the high dignity which belonged be-longed to It Mr Eberhardt In answering stated that It would not only be a dangerous precedent but serious results might follow so radical a change of the Constitution Con-stitution which had served 110 y ars and fostered a weak nation until Il had become one of tho greatest and strongest I strong-est of earth Legislatures he said 1 were no morn uncertain than irresponsible Irrespon-sible political conventions that nominated 1 1 nomi-nated Congressmen It had been demonstrated dem-onstrated by experience that two branches oCthe Legislature elected by different methods gave best results and no good reason had been advanced for making a change Miss Edna Davis sang a solo and Miss Jna Nichols read THS a paper on Hooks What They Are and What Makes Them 1 ire Her production was decidedly Jlowery She spoke of the Inspiration the entertainment and the instruction to be obtained from literature litera-ture and gave a lengthy I list of authors au-thors and the books they had written It N Young recited a humorous extract ex-tract from A Gentleman from Indiana In-diana much to tho delight of his hearers The meeting was dismissed by the song America after which a social hour was enjoyed and refreshments I were served |
