Show GREAT RAiLROAD WOK Southern Pacifics Mammoth Plans for the Year I 4000 MEN AND 1000 HORSES Work to be Confined to Utah and Nevada or from Reno to Ogden Every Curve and Grade Will be Eliminated Where Possible Cutoff Cut-off a Feature of the PlanOfficials Return Westward from Ogden Rock Island Arranges for More Cheap Excursions Railroad Notes 1 The Southern Pacific officials who were in Ogdcn Tuesday night all went west early yesterday morning with the exception of VicePresident Ktutt schnitt who remained in town until I 1115 and also went west Not one of the officials would talk but from outside 1 sources It was learned that The Tribunes Trib-unes statement yesterday morning I that the officials were here arranging for the beginning of work on the cutoff cut-off is correct and that actual work will begin very soon It Is safe to predict that on the east end of the Southern Pacific or that portion between Ogden and Reno there will be the greatest amount of railroad work done that has ever been known to the employees of the road Itis said that 4000 men and 1000 horses will be I engaged the camps to be strung out all along the deserts of Utah and Nevada Ne-vada These outfits and men will be engaged en-gaged in a general straightening out of curves raising track and cutting down grades The whole line is to be built up on the most modern plans and will gradually ballasted Improvements on the line between Lucln and Ogden that have already been made were on a somewhat temporary tem-porary basis so that there will be no financial loss when the cutoff does away with the present track as far asa as-a through line Is concerned Most of the rectifying of the line will be pushed between Lucln and Reno and when the cutoff is completed it will make a pretty straight and easy line from the lake basin to the foot of the Sierras The outlook is very bright on the Southern Pacific for an era of prosperity pros-perity that even Its owners have not wholly anticipated The Ogden route became the new line to the Philippines and Hawaii during the troubles in the former and after the annexation of the latter l It is now the choice route for supplies and soldiers en route to China and trio traffic is becoming so great that the railway hardly knows what lo do with It all For these reasons every degree of curvature every foot of grade reduced will be a great help to the companys operating department and for the next two years work will move unceasingly It will bring plenty of money to Ogden Og-den and that city is Jubilant overtime over-time prospect |
