Show RIOT IN NEW ORELEANS Two Negroes Riled and Several Others Injured New Orleans Ln July 25At least two negroes were killed several others were maimed vand still more serious trouble was threatened this city last night as a result of the shooting of Police Captain Day and Policeman Lamb on Monday The police had found absolutely no trace of the negro Charles the murderer of these olllccrs Last night a tip was circulated for amass a-mass meeting at Lee Circle and by 0 oclpck a crowd of several thousand persons had gathered there The crowd began a march to the scene of the crime I attacking and maltreating all negroes encountered on the way Many shots were fhQcl and several negroes were hit Chief Gaster and every available po liceman together with a company of militia hastened to the scene in time to turn the mob but they could not suppress the lawlessness At 10 oclock the rioters turned their course toward the parish prison with the avowed Intention of lynching wih negro Pierce who was with Charles when the policemen were shot The mob surrounded the prison but the po lice were there in force suniclcnt to prevent an attack and the rioters sat isfied themselves by shooting Into pass ing street cars wounding several wounding persons per-sons white hs well as black At midnight mid-night the rioters began lo disperse mi Ing uptown In crowds The mob was composed largely of boys aged from 15 to 18 years One of the two negroes killed kied was murdered In the tenderloin section be ing shot acer pulling a pistol to de fend himself At 1 oclock four negroes badly beaten beat-en up had been treated at IMP Hnsnitni and four white men l had been treated for gunshot wounds At midnight the Mayor Issued a proc lamation commanding all good citizens to so to their hOlies Not since the lynching of the Italians several years ago has there been such general cx 1eleral citement as there was last night dur lag these disturbances A crowd of hoodlums killed l a negro at the French market at 2 oclock this morning |
