Show TWO SENATORS ARRIVE Shoup of Idaho and Daniel of Virginia Here IDAHO WILL GO REPUBLICAN Senator Shoup Finds the Political Situation His State Decidedly Encouraging Has No Fear the Fuslonists Will Carry the State I Time of Opening of Fort Hall Reservation Re-servation Senator Daniel Taking a Western Trip for Recreation and is Overlooking Politics I I I Senator George L Shoup of Idaho i arrived In the city last evening on a business visit of a few days and registered reg-istered at the Knutsford Speaking of the political situation In Idaho the Senator said he had only been in that State five days since his return from Washington but from observation and talks with well Informed politicians I he feels very sanguine that at the next election Idaho will cast her electoral vote for President McKinley and will also elect the Republican State ticket and a majority of Republicans to the State Legislature Fully 00 per cent of the Sliver Republicans who voted for Bryan four years ago he said xvlll I at the next election alllgn themselves with the Republican national party The Republicans will also ho reels confident receive considerable accessions acces-sions from the Populists and the Democrats Dem-ocrats Former Populists and Democrats Demo-crats will vote the Republican ticket he says because Idaho has enjo red I great prosperity under the McKinley I admlnlbtnftlon whereas under Democratic I Demo-cratic rule there wasgreat depression because they are In l accord with the I Administration oil Its policy of expansion I ex-pansion and because they believe the I affairs Of the Government would be much safer under the control of the McKinley administration than under an administration at which Mr Bryan would be the head A big effort will be made for a fusion between the Democrats Populists and what Is left of the Silver Republicans but Senator Shoup thinks it will meet C I + B bj S l f Senator George L Shoup with poor success The fusion convention conven-tion Is called for next Tuesday at Pocatello catcllo and a warm time Is expected for two or three days The straight Republicans meet In convention at Boise on the same day In regard to the opening of the Fort Hall reservation which was obtained largely by the efforts of Senator Shoup he says agents to make allotments to the Indians In severally appraisers for the Improvements on the portion of the reservation to be thrown open and other oillccrs to arrange the details are expected to be on the ground in a few days and their reports when sent In will take precedence of moat other business In the department Under favorable fa-vorable circumstances the reservation will be opened In four months while delays may arise which may cause Its postponement for a month longer or at most two months The chances arc however that it will not by any means go over the present year In addition to the bill for the openInG open-ing of the reservation Senator Shoup was an ardent advocate of the free homes bill the civil code for Alaska known as the Carter bill and largely through his efforts the Government appropriation of 100000 for Investigating Investi-gating the underflow of water in i arid regions of Idaho was obtained He Is now giving his special attention to a measure making appropriation for the building of canals for tho reclamation of arid lands In the West and placing the control of public lands In the hands of the State and Territorial Legislatures Legisla-tures These rncasures he expects will be acted upon at the next session of Qonsrcss I J |
