Show THE WATER QUESTION AND BONDS The recent agitation about water has brought out some facts not before generally gen-erally l understood by the public The committee intrusted with the care of the water began work in January but owing to the opposition on the part of Borne of the Council no vote could be obtained toward Improving the supply until late in May The chairman of the committee and the Engineer say they have never antagonized the use of ho i water In the artesian wells but have not recommended that anything should bo clone with It because the name expenditure would Insure more water from other sources and then it would enter the city pipes by gravitation and avoid the expense of pumping As stated yesterday the money i asked for in the proposed bonds Is on careful estimates to bo at once used for thei purpose specified Asked what was proposed for Immediate Imme-diate help tho answer was to complete the purchhscs of land III Parleys canyon can-yon which would add as much as would the water from the artesian wells Second to erect stand pipes along the canal through which tho sprinkling oC the city could accomplished at a saving of 1000000 gallons dally Third the connecting of Mill creek water with that of Parleys canyon which can be done in six weeks and which would add more water than flows from the wells1 Fourth the laying lay-ing of the necessary mains in tho city When asked what was being done toward giving a pressure to the pipes in case of fire the answer was that the reservoir on the bench will be finished August 1st In which it Is proposed to keep 2000000 gallons all the time for use In an emergency like a fire As to the artesian water Mr Kelsey explains that while the machinery could doubtless be placed at the figures stated it would require an expenditure of from 18000 for 2000000 gallons per day and 38000 for 4000000 gallons per day to lay the mains to that point and more it would require three weeks advertising for lowest bids before eIther the pipe the pump or the boilers boil-ers could be bought and white ready to carry out any plan that maybe may-be deckled upon his present belief Is I that a better expenditure can be made of the money However that matter will be more carefully considered tomorrow to-morrow night Mr Kelsey objects to being charged with the present condition of the water supply and cites his repeated recommendations recom-mendations to the Council as an answer to the complaints He says the authorities au-thorities are prepared to begin to give relief in the next two or threc weeks If 1 the money is provided At the same time the proposed work ought to have been begun three months ago Men were talking against the bonds yesterday because It was charged that the purpose was to arrange for much work in order to colonize the city with a host of worklngmen about election time The truth Is the proposition Is to have the work completed before election elec-tion time comes around All agree that the work Is most urgent ur-gent and the necessity for It I very great Every one interested in the welfare of the city ought to vote yes on the bond proposition The money must be raised The city Is In danger r because the needed work has so long been delayed and It must be done cither by the bonda or by a greatly added tax and It is not fair to lay that additional burden upon the taxpayers this year |
