Show CAUTION TO TREEPLANTERS Numerous reports having come to the State Board of Horticulture of the finding find-ing of root gall or crown gall In fruit trees received from nurseries it is deemed advisable to caution all persons against planting any trees so infected It Is now well settled that the crown gall Js a disease lhat is contagious so that infected trees are not only worthless worth-less In themselves but are a menace to healthy trees In the same orchard or f vicinity The disease Is usually distinguishable dis-tinguishable by I the appearance of knots or swellings on the nmln root of the tree near where the smaller roots branch out Sometimes the knots are quite Mnall and are distributed over the whole root system Tt Is often contended con-tended lhat the swellings are the work of the aphis but this would render the > trees scarcely less objectionable It is therefore advised that nil nurserymen discardall trees showing any knots or swellings and that persons receiving such trees at once destroy them bince such trees are nol only worthless but a positive damage to Lime premises where they may be planted This warning warn-ing Is issued in the interest Of the i planters of fruit trees as well as of the nurserymen since all such Infected trees found by Inspectors vihi be destroyed de-stroyed thus entailing needless expense upon the shippers of such stock Very respectfully J A WRIGHT Secretary Utah State Hoard of llorli Culture Ogden Utah April 17 1000 |
