city Jail yard yesterday morn Ing short before S oclock and started In the direction of the boulevard in City Creek canyon I Is probably unnecessary to say that the kicker vus Ed Murtle Dey say ho went on as how dey is going to wurrk us but eight hours a day I but how do wo know unless we have a I watch along alonu Oh dear me but I Its hard an Its sick Iam to boot Winall wlrrali I But an hour from that time Murtio was shoveling away as though he had a contract instead of a day job and was as happy as though he were at lilterty Tho city prisoners went out yesterday for the first time in many years and wore under the charge of Jobfeph V Bush and John B Furstpr r with Officer Of-ficer Roberts who has had considerable experience In this kind of work In command of all a position which he will hold until the new men become accustomed I ac-customed to heir I duties CONDITION OF BOULEVARD Some very good work was done upon the boulevard yesterday and In consideration con-sideration I of the fact that it las not been touohpd by pick or shovpl l forborne for-borne years past was found to be in very fair condition as far up the canyon can-yon as Fifth North on the west or Tenth street on the east side of the canyon I The boulevard was first commenced in 1801 I was surveyed from a point I at the corner df State and First North street to f point about hajf a mile above the brick tank In the canyon where the cast road was to reach the bed of the crock there to Join the road running down the east side of the canyon and commencing at a point opposite Twelfth street Then tho road or boulevard was to be continued on to connect with the Penrose drive dlo at Popperton and thence to Fort Doug las The work was only partially finished fin-ished however there tlll being some bier HIs and cuts to make In order that an easy descent Into the canyon maybe may-be had from the west side and In many places t will be necessary that the road be widened a few feet In order that two teams may pass along the roadway In safety The Idea was a good one and the men who conceived It but who failed to carry It out will be pleased to know that the city has taken hold of the matter A drive over the boulevard In the summer evenings will bo one of the attractions of the city Just an lon an It IH put In proper shape To complete the work will require re-quire a bridge over City Creek where the eastern and the western roads meet and also considerable scraper workonthe road toward Fort Douglas This latter wIll be comparatively easy it 3s In the canyon where hard work I and vlll be an some engineering necessary But with a gang of from twenty to thirty men working six days in the week great progress should be made In a very short time lme THEY ARE QUITE WILLING A chat with several of the prisoners on the boulevard yesterday afternoon revealed the fact that there were few If any who had any grievance at being compelled to work nt hard labor on the boulevard The majority expressed themselves as being glad to do anything any-thing to get out of the black hole and into the sunlight sUltght v I Eph Kelly was hoard to puraplirase the words of Gen Sherman by saying that Work is hell Old Man Waiters who bus begged on the streets for a i quartet of a century ami who wns iuught at last was noncommittal although he seamed to covet the Job that had by I iommon consoii been given to Grand High Master Water Carrier Jakomnn Al I Householder was heard to whlstlo rather softly The Old Homo Aint Vhnt It Used to He Murtle turned his fare to the canyon wall as the artist tried to get I glimpse of him and muttered Aim phwat8 the matter Ald th spalpeen nnyway sure ho has lugged me plenty ilous he seem t think i wonders a I has i grown fat an handsome on tho grub uv the jai and he threw a shovelful of dirt dun the hill with emphasis But the prisoners started smut well and they promise to be on their good behavior be-havior THE FEAST AT NOON An interesting scene Is at the noon hour Working ns far away from the Jail as they are they are fed on the grounds Ont of the prisoners Is made eook and about 1 oclock he starts the lire and poon bit rashers of bacon are frying In the pan These and the ac companylng bread are washed down I with coffee and then the men take it easy until the guards Inform them lhatI unli I tho noon hour is 1 up The olllcn of Grand Announcer of the Approach of I the Bacon and Coffee has not yet been niled but there was some talk yesterday yester-day of tendering It to Uph Kelly on account of the resonant qualities of his lower register Owing to the fict that there were no Instructions given the guards yesterday I they were merely working In the dark butl If It Is the Intention of the city that some benefit Is to accrue from the hiring of the guards and the putting of the prisoners to work then It will be necessary lrloners surveys be run and stakes driven In order that the workers may know where they are at As It now is f the work is being necessarily done in an uncertain manner The main Idea with some seems to be that the work was provided merely as a punishment for the prisoners 1C that be true then there was no necessity neces-sity for the hiring of the extra guards Certain It is that the taxpayers have a right to demand that the prisoners Khali earn at least enough to pay the guards who watch them I Is understood under-stood that a new survey of the boulevard boule-vard will be made and the stakes set Just as early as convenient |
