con-vention at Philadelphia I named two United States Senators i Governor and the second In command of the Republican Re-publican State organization as their choice for dclegatesatlarge Then they complimented the newspaper news-paper profession by naming electors atlargc the proprietor and editor of a Buffalo newspaper and the proprietor and editor of a Rochester newspaperMEN newspaper-MEN WHO WERE HONORED The men signally honored were United States Senator Thomas C Platt United States Senator C 1r Depew Gov Roosevelt and Slate Committee Chairman B 1 ODcll as delcgatcsat large and Edward H Butler of Buffalo and F A Mitchell of Rochester as clectorsatlarge FEW SPECTATORS The concntiou was not enthusiastic at Its morning session but was demonstrative demon-strative at its afternoon session I had few spectators when it met at noon and a good gathering when It met In the late afternoon I demonstrated demon-strated that so far as Individual delegates dele-gates went they were not VlccPresIdent WILD OVER TEDDY When the temporary and permanent chairman announced the candidacy of Cloy Roosevelt for a second term the convention went wild with enthusiasm but when Mr Sherman coupled the names of McKinley and Roosevelt the applause and enthusiasm were still greater So it was impossible to diagnose diag-nose the attitude of the majority of the delegates toward the Governor FAVOR A SECOND TERM I Is believed however that the general gen-eral trend Is toward the renomlnatlon of Roosevelt and the pushing of Woodruff Wood-ruff for second place on the national ticket The convention had the unique distinction dis-tinction of having no business of the committee on contested seats to perform per-form and of having no interruption of the programme laid out by the organization organi-zation CONVENTION CONVENES The convention met In the Grand Central palace B B Odell Jr chairman chair-man of the State committee called the convention to order and the Rev Dr David J Burrell of the Marble Collegiate Colle-giate church delivered an Invocation State Senator N A Elberg of New York city was made temporary chairman chair-man and addressed the convention at some length dwelling upon tho ability with which the State and national Governments had been administered I by Gov Roosevelt and President McKinley Mc-Kinley respectively I EULOGY OF ROOSEVELT Speaking of Gov Roosevelt Mr Els berg said New York will make no sacrlllce of him as yet at any rate and not until the State has had another term of Roosevelt as Us Governor will thc relinquish him to what vc hopo are higher honors still In store This declaration was greeted with enthusiastic h the delegates sins tc applause by dpleSatcB I HISSED QUIGG ExCongressman Lemuel E Qulgg was made chairman of the committee on resolutions The usual resolutions I to refer all resolutions to the committee commit-tee without discussion wns adopted Mr Qulgg arose to offer a resolution I relating to the committee on resolutions I resolu-tions when some one called for three ton The cheers began feebly but I In an Instant from galleries and the hisses which side of the hal came drowned the cheers The chairman llnally rapped the disturbers to order closing the unpleasant Incident TOOK A RECESS Alter the appointment of committees the convention took C recess until 1 oclock The afternoon HOHHlon of the convention NAME I Allusions to McKinley were received with applause but mention of Roosevelt Roose-velt created a whirlwind of excitement and his declaration that Roosevelt l must have a second term as Governor brought the audience to Its feet with I cheers and hindtlappings Mention of Mckinley and Roosevelt not evidently I I Intended lu ticket the two names caused another burst of enthusiasm and evidently hurt the feeling of the II Woodruff men for at the conclusion of the chairmans speech they started cheering for their candidate which wits Joined in by the delegates from Queens and Suffolk and was only checked by a demonstration of disapproval disap-proval on the part of the other delegates dele-gates PLATFORM READ The usual lists of vicepresidents and secretaries were read and then Lemuel F Quigg of New York was called to the stage to read the platform He was received with mingled hisses and applause Mr Quigg waited until the noise had subsided and then read the I platform which was adopted I I congratulates the country that the pledges on the faith of which William McKinlcy and Hobart were elected four years ago have been redeemed I Indorsed both the administration of President McKinley and Gov Roosevelt Roose-velt I asserts that the Republican party found the country after four years of Democratic government paralyzed para-lyzed as to industry weak In trade and commerce and impoerlMhed in its public pub-lic treasury FOREIGN POLICY APPROVED The platform extols Republican party par-ty government as equally effective and Intelligent In war as In peace The policy of this Government with regard 1 re-gard to the status of Spains conquered I con-quered colonial possessions Is approved ap-proved a < characteristically American the platform continuing The Independence I Inde-pendence of Cuba pledged to Cuba and proclaimed to the world In the declaration declara-tion of war has been secured and advanced ad-vanced by every public act The American Amer-ican military force In Cuba has been 1 reduced Local government has been established and steps arc now being taken for popular elections In Cuba to erect there a free government of the Cuban people preparatory to committee list was called for the first friction of the day developed When Abe Gruber made alight a-light over L E Quigg being uajned In the Fourteenth district the chair ruled that a written signed statement of twentynine out of thirtynine of the delegates elected Mr Qulgg Mr Gru bel said there had been no meeting of the delegates and the election was of the snap order The list went through with the exception of the Ninth district which was referred tt the State committee At 55 oclock the convention adjourned sine die |
