which Is filled too to-o with voters of all kinds and the evidences arc that great inroads in-roads are being1 made into the Popu listlc and Democratic vote which has heretofore controlled this camp visitors began to arrive yesterday and by convention time today i seemed there was scarce room even on the streets for all and the supplying of lodging and eating for the crowds was n task so huge that it was Indeed a wonder how It was acomplished so well The committee who had this in charge deserving especial praise and credit t ORGANIZATION At 10 oclock a m the Judicial convention con-vention unt THE SENATORIAL CONVENTION consisting of delegates from the same counties except Kane next convened with the same temporary chairman and James 1 Errickson of Richfield Rlchfcld temporary secretary The usual work of temporary organization was transacted trans-acted and recess was then taken until the close of the judicial convention JUDICIAL At 2 oclock the judicial convention conventon assembled with the temporary officers installed as permanent and Joseph Cameron of Panguitcll as sergeantal arms and Joseph E Sleeks of Thurber as chaplain The proceedings of this session were In marked contrast with those of the previous by reason of the excessive amount enthusiasm displayed The glee club of Panerultch was present and regaled the delegates and spectators with stirring songs well rendered and every time the name of Judge McCarty of John F Ohldester was mentioned a shout approval and delight went up all of which enlivened the proceedings After the report of the committees adopted and prayer the following platform was THE PLATFORM The Republicans of the Sixth Judicial Judi-cial district In convention assembled congratulate the citizens and especially especial-ly the Republicans of the district upon the splendid business condition which prevails In our county State and district dis-trict at the present time under a Republican Re-publican National Administration In happy and marked contrast with the condition which existed four years ago under c Democratic National Administration Adminis-tration We congratulate the people upon the magnificent results which have come from the able patriotic and distinguished services of William Mc Klnley President of the United States and we predict his triumphant reelection reelec-tion and rejoice in the gratifying fact that under his guiding hand our Nation Na-tion has been advanced In splendor and glory to a position never before attained We refer with pride to the services of our judicial officers and remind the people of the fact that all the obstacles incident In safely launching the ship of State in interpreting laws new and untried have been met anw overcome successfully that the laws have been executed and Interpreted without fear or favor and that all men have stood on an exact equity before the laws The safety of the people Is secured only through an incorruptible judiciary and we refer with pride to the able services of Hon W M McCarty o Judge of this district to his impartiality impar-tiality in Interpreting and applying the law and in his universal fairness to all men We also refer with pride lo the record of Hon John F Chldcster District Attorney of the district In his untiring efforts to enforce the law which has made him a terror to all evildoers The affairs of the district have been managed and disposed of with dispatch economy and justice and to the universal s satisfaction of the people We heartily Indorse the national Republican platform and appeal to all good citizens who believe In upholding law and enforcing order and in upholding up-holding our flag at home and abroad to vote for the Republican candidates herewith presented S NOMINATIONSr After which tho nomination Monroe the Judges hometown home-town anxious but in response to the plea of rolling up the largest majority Kane county was yielded to and Jlon E D Woolley of ICanab wau accorded the honor of making the nominating speech It was indeed a glowing tribute to the honor Integrity and masterly ability of Judge McCarty which brought forth round after round of ap plauso Equally strong and hearty was the seconding speech ot H E Lisonbee of Monroe Garfield moved C iiuspcn sion of the rules and the Judge was nominated by acclamation with n most resounding vote So was also lion John F Chidester for District Attorney after his nomination nomi-nation in an able speech by M I M Steele Jrand seconding speech Ijy Mr Erlckson The candidates thus honored were brought Into the con f vention and made cordial and able lventon i speeches acceptance promising only I to friend and foe alike exact Justice with special privileges to none I I Committees for work during the campaign I cam-paign were elected and the convention adjourned JOHNSON FOR SENATOR The second session of the Senatorial convention found Mr Steele as permanent perma-nent chairman Mr Erlckson secretary and B H Jensen of Sauna chaplain Ringing resolutions indorsinG the Administration Ad-ministration and national platform congratulations on the return of the Nation to prosperity the workman to the shops and the business affairs to a firm and stable basis opposing the withdrawal of the hag from any land where it has been placed through the justness of our cause and the bravery of our men and urging State legislation I legisla-tion and the salt of State lands for the building of reservoirs was adopted The platform also censured the work I and action of the last Legislature especially es-pecially with reference to the frittering I away of time and money in the vain I attempt to elect n man to the United States Senate whose only qualifications MOS the possession of wealth 5 Candidates for nomination as State Sheffield Garfield C 3 Pluto 4 Sovicr 1C C Wayne 1 Totals 2 1 Mr Sheffield arose and In a neat speech amid shouts of applause moved that the nomination of Mr Johnson be made unanimous which was carried I vociferously Pending the bringing In the hal of the winning candidate the Glee club sang after which Mr Johnson John-son addressed the convention enthusing enthus-ing his hearers with the fervency this t-his Republicanism and promising his best efforts In the event of electionA campaign committee was elected and the convention adjourned Biographical William M McCarty first saw the light at Alpine Utah county Utah on May 15 1S59 His parents were early pioneers in southern Utah having moved to St George In 18C3 and have resided in the southern part of Utah since that time His avocation up to the time that he began the practice of law was of a varied va-ried nature Including freighting herding S Includlngfreightngherd ing and dealing in cattle sawmilling railroading and mining He began to read law at Monroe Utah in 18S2 without any of the advantages ad-vantages that law students usually enjoy such a law schoolsetc and with only a commonschool education and was admitted to practice In the Second District court at Beaver In September 1887 In 18S9 he was appointed District Attorney At-torney of that district which position I i he held the greater part of the time up J to Statehood In 1S90 he was admitted to practice I before the Supreme court of Utah Upon division on national party lines he was elected County Attorney of Se vier county which position he held for two terms with great satisfaction to himself and the people lie was elected Judge of the Sixth Judicial district in 1895 which ofllce he still holds to the universal satisfaction I satis-faction and approval of the people I During his ofilcial career as Judge of I this district he has been called Into the Supreme court about forty times has written fourteen of this high tribunals opinions Including one not yet handed down and one dissenting opinion in the most Important case oral or-al that of the Crescent Mining company com-pany vs the Silver King Mining company com-pany Judge McCarty is essentially a self made man In all that term Implies and his wide and varied experience before be-fore he entered upon the study of law together with his sobriety industry economy and indomitable courage has made him one of the best Judges and foremost men of our State He has always al-ways been a pronounmed anduncom promising Republican That he will be reelected goes without saying DISTRICT ATTORNEY i J John F Chidester was born In SpanIsh j l Span-ish Fork Utah on the 2nd day of February Feb-ruary A D 1853 and has resided In Utah mostly in the southern part ever since excepting two yearn that he resided re-sided In Nevada Like most of the men Th the southern part of Utah his avocation previous to tho time that he begun the practice of law was that of a farmer lumberman freighter and I such work as was common In the country coun-try where he resided SIn S-In the Cal of 1870 in Lincoln county I Nov he began the study of law and one year later he moved to Washington City Utah and was there elected City Attorney which he held for two terms At that time Washington wan a young and flourishing city bolng situate near Silver Reef which at that time was in full activity thereby furnishing plenty of business both criminal and civil for Mr Chidester In 1SS5 ho moved to Pangultch where he has resided over since and In the same year was admitted to practice before the Second District court at Beaver SIn S-In ISflG he was admitted to the Supreme Su-preme court He wan a member of the Conalltu llu I tlonnl convention and also SenatorS Senator-S from the Tenth Senatorial district in the first State Legislature Aside from I these positions he has hold Hovcral Important Im-portant county offices In Garfield Garfeld count coun-t On May 3th 1899 he was appointed by 1 Gov Wells DistrictAttorney for the Sixth Judicial district in which office he has given general and welldeserved satisfaction Mr Chldcster ha gained for himself an enviable reputation and today stands in the front ranks as a lawyer as an active and upright citizen citi-zen and as an honest and kindhearted man I manHe Us always been an unyielding I and positive Republican |
