Show MIVART AND ROMAN CHURCH r Late Professor Involved in Sharp Controversy with Vaughn London April 1Time late Dr Mlvart whose death Is announced here was recently re-cently Involved In a sharp controversy with Cardinal Vaughan archblshqp of Westminster growing out of certain articles he had contributed to the Nineteenth Nine-teenth Century and the Fortnightly Review Re-view Ho had demanded from the cardinal car-dinal as proprietor of the Tablet the principal Roman Catholic organ In London Lon-don an apology for a personal attack made upon him in that paper The cardinal replied that the matter was entirely one for adjustment between the editor of the Tablet and Dr Mlvart as he was responsible for neither the language nor the arguments of the Tablet Tab-let This was the subordinate feat tiro of the controversy Its principal feature fea-ture involved Dr Mlvarts views as to the inspiration of the Scriptures A sensational article by Prof Hart appeals in the April North American Review In which he says that the reception re-ception by Cardinal Vaughan of his magazine articles showed the Roman church to be essentially a petrified and not a progressive church Continuing Prof Mlvart says he was called uponto declare his belief in certain cer-tain books of the Bible It was of course absolutely Impossible for me or for any other scientific man to sign such a formula ho says unless It was clearly and publicly known that I should be free to reject as errors statements state-ments historically untrue such as the account of the serpent and the tree the brlnglife of animals to Adam to be named tho history of the tower of Babel that of the Delugo and so on Piof Mlvart believed there were errors er-rors In the Bible and he wrote to his cardinal asking if by signing the formula form-ula referring to the books he would be bound to accept everything Biblical as fact It is very noteworthy says Prof Mlvart that I could get no authoritative au-thoritative answer from the cardinal The fact was he dared not answer Ho could not allow that God had Inspired man to write falsehoods or that the church had as of course It has misled mis-led mankind aa to the word of God for a long succession of centuries Prof Mlvart continues It was and is absolute dogma of the church that the damned are damned eternally that from hell there is no possibility of escape es-cape and that the two kinds of torment tor-ment in the Infernal prison will go on forever and ever and ever After mature reflection and many mental struggles I have come to the conclusion that the Roman Catholic church must tolerate a transforming process of evolution with respect to many of its dogmas 01 sink by degrees de-grees Into an effete and InMfgnlflccnt body composed of Ignorant persons amass a-mass of women and cnlldren and a number of mentally effeminate men Concluding Prof Mlvart says The most Imperative task for Roman theologians the-ologians today Is to so modify tho meaning of the dogma of the churchs Infallibility as to render postadmission by them with the councils of Florence Trent and that the Vatican have erred and that the Popes encyclical is to be on one slda as of absolutely no account whatever I |
