Show YOUNG MEN KilLED II I I I I Two Mormon Boys Shot by Cattle Thieves I MURDERERS WERE FIENDISH Andrew A Gibson and Frank Los ucur Who Were Pursuing a Party of Desperadoes Near St Johns Ariz Ran upon tho Robbers Unexpectedly Un-expectedly and Were Sot to Death Before the Killing There Had Been a Running Fight Between Be-tween a Posso and tho Thieves Two young Mormon boys Frank Lcs ucur and Andrew A Gibbons were killed by cattle thieves about twenty five miles northeast of St Johns Ariz on Tuesday March 27th A letter to the News from St Johns gives the particulars of the tragedy On the day before the killing a mall carrier on the route from St Johns to Sprlngcrvllle saw five mon killing a beef and he Informed Sheriff Bcelcr who was at Sprlngervllle Tho sheriff started out that night with a posse passing north of St Johns and coming upon the camp of the thieves In the morning A running fight was kept up for twelve or fifteen miles when the horses of some of the pose gave out and the party returned Another posse had In the meantime started and as it missed the returning sheriffs posse it kept on supposing the sheriff and his men were still ahead When about twenty miles from St Johns the party divided four going to the north for the purpose of heading off the thieves from a ranch to which they were apparently steering the other four Fianclsco Ruiz Antonio Jarimlllo Frank Lesucur and Andrew A Gibbons Gib-bons followed the t trail They saw a sheep herder who told them that the thieves fie In number had passed there about half an hour before end showed the way they had gone When about twentyfive miles from SL Johns Ruizs and Jnrimlllos horses gave out so they were compelled to return to the shec camp and slay for the night Gibbons and Lesueur stayed on the trail Jarlmilo and Ruiz tried to persuade per-suade Gibbons and Lesueur to return with them Gibbons was Inclined to lo so but Lesueur declined and said Let us go on tho sheriff Is ahead and will need our help Then these two procedced on the trail and Ruiz and Jnrlmlllo turned off It was then between I and 5 oclock p m Tuesday March 27th They had not gone more than five or six hundred yards from where they separnied till they came to a rocky bluff covered with cedars > brush and large boulders SHOT DOWN BY THIEVES The thieves were In hiding on the top of the hill Lesueur having the best horse was about fifty yards ahead and as the bluff was quite steep they were riding slowly up a trail the only one In that vicinity that went en top of the bluff When within about fifteen feet of the thieves without with-out a word of warning the desperados opened fire on the two boys Lesueur was apparently killed Instantly but I Gibbons was shot In the bowels first and ran some distance down the hill using his handkerchief to wipe off the blood before he was struck In the back by 1 another ball ns his handkerchief was found near his body covered with blood ACT OF FIENDS Not satisfied with committing such an awful crime the villains came down the hill to the bodies put their firearms fire-arms close to the poor boys heads and shot them again and again as each of their faces showed powder burns and each had several wounds After thus mulllaiing their bodies the fiends took their horses saddles and guns rifled their pockets and stole their hats Their bodies lay there from the time they were killed until the next day about noon when they were found by a posse under ftlchaul Gibbons who had gone In search of them Richard Gibbons and William O Gibbons a brothel of one of the dead boys remained with the bodies while the others returned lo town with the sad newu As soon us oossiblo after receiving the word a team was secured and a party of citizens citi-zens went after the bodies The murdercd boys were burled at St Johns with Impressive ceremonies and the entire communlly Is in mourning mourn-ing and calling upon the officers of New Mexico to suppress the outlawry prevalent preva-lent In the region In which the murders mur-ders occurred Sheriff Beeles Is on the trail of the murderers with a posse of good and determined citIzens but the murderers had thirtysix 197 le lcor a mission lo Great Britain September 2S 1S97 where he remained re-mained for over two years reaching home November 28 1809 Frank Lesueur was the son of Hon John T Lcsueur and Geneva Caste was born In St Johns Arizona September Septem-ber 1 1SSO being the second von of his parents as Elder Gibbons was of his parents l He had attended the Brigham Brig-ham Young academy at PIOVO two veais and was ordained an elder In Salt Lake City by Elder 11 McCune and President Udall Last February he receiVed re-ceiVed a call from President Snow for a foreign mission and was anxious to honor the
