Show WHAT ABOUT LEAD The Congressional election In Utah will be u straw at least to point which way the wind will blow In November not only In Ulah but In Colorado in Nevada In Idaho and In Montana The election then has more than t a I local importance Time Democratic press and orators are plyclnfr great emphasis em-phasis upon lie I silver I question as a I vital principle which must never be abandoned at least not before elect ion Still It is as plain as day that with i Mr Bryan elected ho could not to save I his life do anything to advance the t cause of bimetalism But there is another an-other melal which the Democracy do not discuss That Is lead Utah last year I produced 50062300 pounds of it Again I so Intimately Is l it involved with the other metals that 37 110 per cent of the total product of gold and 97 310 percent per-cent of the silver mined In Utah lost 3 year were In combination with lead and In many mines It I t requires the main product and all tine byproducts to obtain values that Justify working the mines at all So were the load to be stricken out or greatly rcdxiced In price the mines would be forced to close I down A generous tariff of iVfc cents per pound Is Imposed upon all lead ores coming Into this country and 2A cents per pound on base bullion This was put in the tariff law as u direct protection to Western miners So little lit-tle did the last Democratic Legislature of Utah care for this that when the president of the Utah Ore Producers association begged for a little State help to enable him to fight the effort of the lead combine to have the Mexican Mexi-can and British Columbia ores come in duty free that august body would not only not give him any help but would not vouchsafe as much as a friendly resolution With that tariff struck off the effect upon mining not only in Utah but In Colorado and Nevada and especially in Idaho would be most disastrous dis-astrous What then Is the sensible thing for Utah voters to do Ts it to support an abstraction and neglect a reality or is It to support a party that at least has shown a disposition to protect such products as need protection In the Democratic organs every day can be seen fierce denunciations of the tariff as the mother of all infamies but time tariff on lead In Utah In Nevada Ne-vada and in Idaho especially keeps many a mine In operation that would bo silent but for It gives hundreds of men employment who except for It would have lo find something to do In some other field or bo Idle Tt Is n practical question one that conicss directly home to the prosperity of this people and how will it be l dealt with on election day It Is most important im-portant that a full expression of tine peoples sentiments should be made through the ballot for the result hero will have Its effect In tine surrounding Slates If we are correct there is but one silver mine that has no byproduct that is being worked In Utah there is only one that docs not depend as much upon its load as upon its silver What will tine voters do i |
