Show OUTINGOF CAMBfflANSI Welshmen Have a Merry Day at the Lake SPEECHES IN NATIVE TONGUE J Tho Cambrian Association Furnished Much Enjoyment Yesterday at Saltair Interesting Series of Contests Con-tests Salt Lake and Ogden Employees Em-ployees of the McDonald Candy Company and the Twcntyfdurth Ward People at Lagoon Scandinavians Scandina-vians at Salt Palace j 1 A gaIn day was yesterday for tho Cambrians of Zjon Under the auspluqs of the Cambrian association they galh ctvd at Saltalr by 1 humlrrds sang tho SOURS of their native land listened tp addiessns Iu their native tongue and made merry generally lion Arthur It Thomas was master of ceremonies and presented each participant par-ticipant In the enjoyable programme enjoyable lo Oumbilans at least In 1 his happiest vein The opening1 number on the programme was the I singing of the Welsh song Hen Wind I ly Nlmdau which was entered Into with a spirit which showed that the land of their fathers was revered by the Cambrians of this city 1 CapL D Li Davis addressed his countrymen coun-trymen ami while It is known the I speech was a good one no attempt will be made to rcpioduuu It In this edition Then followed a number of contests I for prizes I Reese Dales captured tho prize for I tho best Welsh song A prle for the best duet In VclHh which was finely tendered was awarded to Reese Dales and David 3 DavIes One of the most Interesting features of the programntc Judging by the applause ap-plause accorded the contestants was the Impromptu speechmaking in Welsh Each speaker was limited to five minutes and the prizes were awarded to William Jones Henry Hav rls Edward W Reese and William Edwards Ed-wards The subject of the brief addresses ad-dresses was The Welshman us a Factor In tho Progress of the World A tep dance between men of the youthful age of 50 or over proved that men are but boys to larger stature grown and the way they made thick feet go was astonishing considering their years The first prize In this contest was awarded to Joseph R Parry of Salt Lake aged 5S the second prize to John Evans of Brigham Oft r aged 72 The prize In the Pcnllllon singing contest was awarded to H E Giles whose original verses kept the audience 1 audi-ence In an uproar of laughter and applause I ap-plause lie also told several funny stories which created no little amusement amuse-ment Tp David John fell the prize for thc best gentleman swimmer Miss Ray Grlggs was declared the winner of the prize for being the best lady waltzcr while to Frank Brown fell the gentle mans prize The bowling contest was won by Grlfilth Sanders Mrs Hannah Wright aged 53 took the prizes for being the oldest Welsh person and the oldest lady at the resort The prize for the handsomest baby was awarded to j Florence the twoyearold daughter of Mr and Mrs James Brown There were but two contestants In the yacht race Capt Merrill and Capt Davis The boat of the latter capsized and Its skipper almost came to grief but was rescued before he suffered any serious effects from the drenching The boat however was quite badly damaged dam-aged and had to be towed In Capt Merrill was declared the winner of the race i The families of William II Morgan and Edward Parry tied for the prlzo offered for the largest family each consisting con-sisting of ten members The committees In charge of the arrangements ar-rangements and J programme Included Messrs Arthur D Thomas John James D L Davis W 1 Lewis H F Evans David John T F Thomas Jr W N Williams and Xephl L Morris |
